Sport karate has its roots in the dueling samurai of ancient Japan. Any strike of a blade to a vital area is lethal thus only perfect technique can survive. Thankfully, punches and kick are rarely powerful enough to do lasting damage to a person, so in a controlled environment karate can make a exciting and entertaining sport.
