So basically, similar to how England was several Kingdoms before coming together in 927CE, and how there was a Holy Roman Empire made of several German principalities long before we had a Germany, Russia (and several of its neighbours, such as Ukraine) started off as the Medieval conglomerate called Kievan Rus.
