The category four storm brought winds of up to 130mph (215km/h) on Jamaica's southern coast.
Social media photos show floodwater pouring down streets, with roofs ripped off by the wind.
The storm has killed at least seven people so far as it sweeps across the Caribbean. It has now been downgraded to a category three storm, and is due to make landfall in Mexico later on Friday.

I've worked with many Jamaicans here in Canada, I'm from Europe but very nice people and cheerful, I love when I've visited Jamaica. The entire Caribbean is a beautiful area in this world.

The tourist said he was at the Hilton, 20 minutes east of Montego Bay. Thatβs on the northern side of the island, away from the worst of the storm, probably at least 40 to 50 miles from where the center of the storm passed. Not surprising the damage was minimal there. It is not indicative of what happened on the southern coast of Jamaica. But it looks like the storm passed a little to the south, keeping the worst of it away from the island.
