The slowness, the fatigue, the late hours, the resistance, the stubborn optimism, the rebellion, the trip thru hell and yet seeing beauty around. This song speaks to my soul in so many ways. My all-time favorite.

This is why I LOVE youtube...I heard a snippet of this song on a show...thought they said messenger. Looked up on here..'i am a messenger' and this came up. I've done that before when I COULD understand one word of a song, I type one word in! And f'ing youtube always finds the song I'm looking for.

Fun fact: Iggy Pop composed this song in 1977 - in Berlin, where he was meeting David Bowie. A nomadic anthem, the lyrics are inspired by Iggy's trips aboard Bowie's car or in the subway, as well as some verses by Jim Morrison.
  • This timeless song has gone down in the history of music just like its composer. For many people (like me) it has become the soundtrack of their life. It's definitely Iggy's best song and one of the best songs ever. We are all passengers in this life, on a car that runs through the city at night, without knowing where we are going.

I live super close to where Iggy grew up in Ypsilanti. I think about him so much while I drive down Carpenter road! This song is absolutely timeless!

LYRICS I am a passenger And I ride, and I ride I ride through the city's backsides I see the stars come out of the sky Yeah, they're bright in a hollow sky You know it looks so good tonight I am the passenger I stay under glass I look through my window so bright I see the stars come out tonight I see the bright and hollow sky Over the city's ripped back sky And everything looks good tonight Singin' la la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la, la la Get into the car We'll be the passenger We'll ride through the city tonight See the city's ripped backsides We'll see the bright and hollow sky We'll see the stars that shine so bright Oh, stars made for us tonight Oh, the passenger How, how he rides Oh, the passenger He rides and he rides He looks through his window What does he see? He sees the silent hollow sky He sees the stars come out tonight He sees the city's ripped backsides He sees the winding ocean drive And everything was made for you and me All of it was made for you and me 'Cause it just belongs to you and me So let's take a ride and see what's mine Singin' la la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la, la la Oh, the passenger He rides and he rides He sees things from under glass He looks through his window's eye He sees the things that he knows are his He sees the bright and hollow sky He sees the city asleep at night He sees the stars are out tonight And all of it is yours and mine And all of it is yours and mine So let's ride and ride and ride and ride Singin' la la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la, la la Singin' la la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la, la la
  • This is one of those songs that I can listen to over and over again - like 8, 9, 10 times in a row. It never gets old!
  • @multiplyx100
I never listened to this song properly before. I love the line 'So let's take a ride and see what's mine'. That's such a beautiful concept. We take so much for granted. This universe is our home. All of ours, including all life. It is ours. After this, we can never be alone again.

i was at 1st year of university when this became my favourite song; i had it as ringtone on phone and loved when i get called. same time i got myself a dog. it's been 10 and half years since then. my dog died of cancer couple of days ago. now i play it again a lot, i just figured it's so like him; energetic, positive, curious, hopeful, happy. i have the first and only small and strong silver lining in the worst event of my life. love you doggo <3
  • @willwolf4627
This looks more like a BEAUTIFUL poem along with rhythm music, one of the best songs ever made.
  • @pillbox59
I saw this '77 tour with Blondie opening and Bowie playing keyboards in Iggy's band. Feeling sadly nostalgic
  • @clarkewi
phenomenal. This track got me thru an ugly divorce 1984. Lost my house but saved my sorry ass. Thank you Iggy and Davie. I owe you both heavily.
