Kiwi for me. 40 lengths behind at 1400m and romped home after weaving through the field. Never raced the track before legendary stuff.

Maybe Diva was special but Kiwi was a freak. I backed him at 13 to 1 and was about to tear up my ticket as they made the turn

Kiwi's win was very impressive. Makybe Diva is a legend. In our lifetime with the weight she carried no one will do that again!

As great as Makybe Diva was, there is no doubt about Kiwi being the top win! For a horse to have won that race after being so far back was miracle stuff, while it's arguable as to whether even Phar Lap could have done that - even with the same weight as Kiwi!

I’m sorry, all these horses are amazing and champions outright. But I believe no horse is better then Phar Lap. He was put under incredible heavy weight and still came thru and won. Can’t beat that horse, he was one of a kind.

Lucky enough to witness the greatest Melbourne cup win of all time and will never be repeated, The great mare Makybe Diva winning an historic third cup in a row carrying a record weight of 58kg for a mare, no 1 for me!
  • I remember watching the Kiwi race with workmates. We had several NZers there and were giving them heaps throughout most of the race. Oh boy didn't they get their revenge.
  • @Fuzcapp
Rain Lover. Piping Lane - my two favourite Melbourne Cup winners.
  • @clintgirdler38
Might and Power was my favourite with Makybe Diva second.
  • @goonerross4834
1990 winner Kingston Rule, still holds the race record , 43 years later........and his sire, was the great Secretariat........
  • @JJ-cr1cq
Honourable mentions to Empire Rose and Might and Power.
  • @tabtab5437
Never mention kiwi in the straight until 50mtrs when flew home going away.thats the one for me.
  • @brucekilby9957
Prince of Penzance was a Remarkable Win for Michelle Payne. But the Greatest Makybe Diva, so hard to Pick, they were all great wins. The Diva winning 3 in a row is amazing.🐴🇦🇺
  • As Jim Cassidy says might and power was the best class horse he’s ever ridden, kiwi was the best stayer he’s ever rode .

Kiwi should have been Number 1. All winners including Phar Lap would have struggled to win the Cup the way Kiwi was trained. Running up hills herding sheep. That's how Kiwi was trained for the Cup. First time at Flemington, last at the 600 and made the win look effortless.
  • @KG1970.
Another one that should have a mention was What a Nuisence in 1985.Amost ot of it and got there.
