The Grinch is a Christmas classic in all of it's iterations. From the original to the Carrey to the newest 2018 version, the Grinch has found his way into our holiday traditions. In a previous theory I talked about the problems with his heart growing three sizes. Today, I'm here to figure out if the Grinch was RIGHT to be angry at the Whos. You see, I think there was a reason we all missed - a medical reason. Get your earmuffs ready, Theorists, we're about to get LOUD!

  • OMG my family needs to hear this. SO BAD. Just the misophonia part. The "just get used to it" mentioned hits so at home. That's what they told me. They always called me overdramatic for covering my ears. Eventually I got into the habit of eating as fast as possible and "using the bathroom" where I just ran downstairs as soon as I was done and stayed there until it was all over. They were worried about the bathroom thing, never considering the fact that I couldn't just "get over" the sounds of a certain person eating. They didn't even put two and two together when I would remain at the table if that person wasn't there...
  • I remember the first time I watched this, and hearing misophonia described, and realizing, "Hey! Those sorts of things are things that drive me nuts, too!" For me, it also seems to extend into seeing certain actions as well (or maybe that's something different).

I love how it always goes "Nobody knows the reason" and then gives him a tragic backstory and a very good reason

As a person who suffers from misophonia, it feels so good to see someone finally talking about it and raising awareness

When I heard her explanation of what Misophonia felt like. I started questioning if I had it, my sister's singing has always bothered me. Not because it was bad or anything, it just. Happened. I felt like covering my ears or going on my phone to stop her from singing, but whenever she started it felt annoying up to the point where I started crying because she wouldn't stop.
  • I haven’t been officially diagnosed with misophobia but I hate the sound of chewing too and my sister chews with her mouth open. I always yell at her for it because it bothers me so much and she just does it more. I really hate it when people do that just to be funny or annoying because it makes me feel physically anxious and upset. I can’t really eat around people and even hearing myself chew is uncomfortable. Even the quieter chewing noises in the video made me feel uncomfortable. I didn’t really know that there was a name for that until a couple years ago and it explained so much lol. I felt the same way as Stephanie described thinking it was just teenage angst or just being annoyed with my sister or family so thank you for talking about this.

I legitimately thought he was going to say he used Nord VPN to watch the grinch in another country lol

WAIT THERES AN ACTUAL NAME FOR "HAVING TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE EAT MAKES ME WANT TO PERSONALLY YEET THEM INTO THE SUN"?!

As a person with misophonia, it made me tear up when you mentioned it, it's an awful experience to deal with and with school it becomes more and more of a problem. I really relate to the Grinch now, which is a funny thing to say, I really hope that it will only last for some years though, I don't want this forever. Thanks for reading my rant haha
  • @Flokran
Today I finally realized that my problem is misophonia. My brother always eats -_-# with his mouth open. Almost every time I got angry because of this, I was told to eat quietly and shut up. It's a relief that now I can live with the knowledge that I'm not alone.😇 Thank you MatPaT!

In the New Grinch movie I thought he had PTSD because of when he sees certain items or hears certain words, he has a panic attack and starts hallucinating. The stress eating also helps this theory.

I swear this man could make me believe I’m a pair of scissors
  • With the church bells, you should also take into account that there are 4 of them being rung in the clip.
  • Matpat you forgot the grinch has to deal with this for 53 years and like your Stephanie said you don't get use to it if anything it gets worse.
  • @TheStupendium
Steph's story completely mirrors my own, it was such a relief when I realised there was a word for it. I've been cursed with working next to some incredibly loud eaters in the past and my co-workers would question why I'd put headphones on and 'ignore' them over lunch. Thanks for raising some awareness.
  • @RevenantMain1
"They'll do something I hate most. Stand close together" Grinch has been social distancing since before it was cool
  • @shizz_009
I have a bad case of misophonia , I really hate mouth sounds when ppl are eating but what really gets me is repetitive sounds. I once got into a fight when I was in high school because a guy kept clicking his pen while we were taking a test
  • i learned that i have misophonia from this video around when it came out and it changed my life. so glad to know theres more people out there who get pissed off by “nothing”. even my family looks at me like i have three heads because of it. this is a nice change.
