Costs related to climate change are expected to reach $38 trillion annually by 2050, but who will pay for the adaptation and mitigation projects needed to combat the extreme weather? NBC News' Stephanie Ruhle moderates a panel with former U.S. climate envoy and Secretary of State John Kerry, Anne Finucane of the TPG Rise Climate Fund and Chair of Rubicon Carbon, and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, a energy and climate editor at The Economist. NBCUniversal News Group is the media partner of Aspen Ideas Festival.

They don't call Greed a deadly sin for nothing.

Tax the rich. 😝 The top 10% could easily fund all of this if they had the will to do it. The rest of us have been pulling their weight for far too long. It's time for them to step up.

If the US really wanted to combat climate change, then governments should've reduced car dependency through safer bicycle infrastructure, light rail transit, and high speed rail. Politicians are never going to ban fossil fuels because it keeps these corporations keep them in office.

Why does not anybody talk about conservation? 80% of energy use is unnecessary - we are just afraid of hurting the economy, hence losing votes.
  • people are dying while companies are figuring out how to make money.
  • Our cities are old models of human innovation. We need to redesign the way we create our cities.
  • We all suffer from our actions, and companies found to have knowingly lied should have penalties and fees. Fossil fuels posting record profits without repercussions is inexcusable.
  • Mr. Kerry notes COPS advances on Methane and 150 corporations, etc., but I did not hear anything about the problem of governments subsidizing the fossil fuel industry worldwide, and worldwide military emissions.

Environment polluters are talking about climate change.
  • Heartening words to hear by an environmental scientist and engineer who has seen these problems, and some solutions, for decades. One action that is essential to the most efficient path forward is to meet in community, to work together in the discomfort of chaotic disagreement, to find solutions.
  • dont you get it yet? us humans have engineered our own demise. more petrol was burned last years than any prior year.. if you think its hot now just wait a few years till that co2 does its thing.
  • Good discussion! Thanks !!! We need to act and recognize we are at war. Urgency not complacency. Come together not against each other.

We are all on a freight train, headed down a steep mountain out of control. Not only are we not applying the brakes, but we are stepping on the accelerator. We have already passed most of the most critical tipping points. A tipping point is the point beyond reversal. Technology will not save us.

Where are the materials for this transition supposed to come from, there is more energy needed for mining ores because high yield locations are depleted.

Can we please hear from you more and more? I wonder if you are getting your knowledge out to the younder generation who really care about the environment and this will help Biden win. We need more and more and more!

How are working class people going to afford high tech autos ? The problem, the wealthy people in my small town that is in senator Kerrys category live in massive homes where I see very little solar panels. Let's not be hypocritical. Also it doesn't look good when you have a event like this in Aspen Colorado. How about holding it in Charleston west virginia and explain to real people how they will afford to survive in this new world ?
  • We are facing what we deserve by ignoring this problem . Sadly 😮
  • You must tax and fine oil corporations. Simple solution but decision makers may not be up to it, so people power needed, like Gretta.
