The Need for Speed series was originally developed by Distinctive Software, a video game studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Prior to Electronic Arts' purchase of the company in 1991, it had created popular racing games such as Stunts and Test Drive II: The Duel. After the purchase, the company was renamed Electronic Arts (EA) Canada. The company capitalized on its experience in the domain by developing the Need for Speed series in late 1992.

EA Canada continued to develop and expand the Need for Speed franchise up to 2002, when another Vancouver-based developer, named Black Box Games, was acquired by EA and contracted to continue the series with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.

Later, Slightly Mad Studios was brought in, releasing Need for Speed: Shift in 2009, followed by a sequel, Shift 2: Unleashed, in 2011. UK-based company Criterion Games would release Hot Pursuit in 2010. The game introduced a social platform, titled Autolog, which allows players to track game progress, view leaderboards, share screenshots with friends, among other features.

At E3 2012, Criterion Games vice president Alex Ward announced that random developers would no longer be developing NFS titles. Ward wouldn't confirm that all Need for Speed games in the future would be developed entirely by Criterion, but he did say the studio would have "strong involvement" in them and would have control over which NFS titles would be released in the future.

In August 2013, following the downsizing of Criterion Games, Swedish developer Ghost Games would become the main studio for the franchise and oversee future development. At the time, 80% of Ghost Games' work force consisted of former Criterion Games employees. Ghost Games would develop 2013's Need for Speed Rivals, the 2015 Need for Speed reboot, 2017's Need for Speed Payback, and 2019's Need for Speed Heat.

Need for Speed (NFS) is a racing video game franchise published by Electronic Arts and currently developed by Criterion Games, the developers of Burnout. The series generally centers around illicit street racing and tasks players to complete various types of races while evading the local law enforcement in police pursuits. The series is one of EA's oldest franchises not under their EA Sports brand. The series released its first title, The Need for Speed, in 1994. The most recent game, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, was released on November 6, 2020. Additionally, a free-to-play mobile installment released in 2015, Need for Speed: No Limits, is actively developed by Firemonkeys Studios, the developers of Real Racing 3.

  • This shows why NFS was so popular back then, gamers didn't even knew these stories yet they were there, the heart that the developers had put in this is so evident.
  • I had no idea the story went this deep, both for the mighty M3 GTR OR the player. Assuming an age of 18 years old at the beginning of the video (the prologue of Carbon), then this puts our player at roughly 38-40 years old. That's a long and legendary career for any racer, questionably legal or not.
  • @Miltypooh2001
Damn the player went through so much in these games you'd think he'd retire and park his car by a beach but taking a photo with a community is a nice conclusion to the story
  • This was perfect, the chronological way u went thru all of the games and followed the BMW towards the end was awesome. Funnily the player made an appearance in need for speed:payback. In the last race of the game if memory serves. One of the racers was Ryan Cooper
  • Seriously speaking, growing up through this series, i never went too deep into its storyline, thinking that every NFS release is just another good racing game with a story... But the way you connected all these games and their stories in a chronological way, i really just want to restart the whole series again from scratch and actually go deep into the storyline... A very well detailed and informative video! This video just increased my interest in the whole series by a thousand times, especially the whole storyline of the series revolving around that one car and that one player . BTW i subscribed! <3 With such informative videos, you surely will go a long way! GG!
  • This makes so much sense in so many ways, not going to lie I almost shed a tear for the player knowing where his racing finally ended and seeing the photo showing his last time racing for the series, the player was with us for 12 long years and beat pretty much the entire world he’s in, hailed as the greatest racer of all time. Wish they would make a need for speed game of the players kid or something showing the players child working his/her way up to finally meet his/her father and race him one on one and you play as the players child of course to ultimately finally get that face reveal of the player himself even though the player is ultimately just you, you are the player, so I guess it kinda wouldn’t work for a face reveal, but we could see the events take place through his point of view after the race ends where the players child reveals him/herself as his child. That is a need for speed game I would love to play in today’s time.
  • damn its nuts how little almost all of us know about the actual story of the series, great vid that brings it all together
  • @volksdude1970
There is still one story that needs to be told before "Ryan Cooper" retires for good... You really expect a man to let somebody just steal a car from him not once, but twice? Then come close to getting it back from a smuggling ring, just to lose track of it again? Ryan needs his Beamer, man. They been through a lot.
  • @localzen9558
This is an absolutely EPIC summary, well done my dude! I can tell this took a ton of work.
  • @jaklin1
Well done! You should get way more recognition for this!
  • @Scorpionczech69
The old most wanted and the NFS Carbon... The nostalgie that Will always be remembered in our hearts of racers and drivers 😇❤️💕🥰
  • After all these years, I have to say this is the best storyline explained from anyone I've ever seen. Thank you for making this video, and great job on the explanation
  • @SkinwalkerClub
Loved how you connected all these games throughout time. Especially with Underground 2 into Most Wanted. And that tribute at the end was nostalgic adrenaline tbh. Haven't played in awhile but NFS made racing my genre still to this day. 🤘🏼
  • @khongor8
I cried at the tribute part. All of the memories of NFS packed into one. Great video man!
  • Great explanation and connection of the stories but I have a couple of things to say Darius didn't pay off Cross, that's why Cross wants Nikki to make sure he got paid and says "Just a bounty hunter, and I always get paid. Just make sure I do." Nikki pays the player's bounty (which should have been around 15 million, not 150k but it's irrelevant at this point) and saves him I also don't think the protagonist in Undercover is the main character (or Ryan Cooper) as the police radio suggests he is caught while the protagonist is listening to it (unless it's an older recording)
  • @xDuviDx
IF electronic arts thought of all this (apart from the obvious most wanted and carbon) the way you described it and created a nfs based on all this lore, there would be a need for speed revival. But so many people just want racing games for the sake of driving (which i understand) and that manifests itself in "lightweight stories to please everyone".. knowing this and EA's ways... I really hope that what lovely heaven you showed us here is true
  • @yuhihe
Thank you man, it's ultimate closure for my 15 years of NFS series. Now I can retired from this racing game in peace.
  • @JohnTezlaNFS
Now you see, this is what i was thinking the story would be like because i want to make a need for speed movie or movies because i love how the most wanted racer story is, maybe when i finish school ill make the movies. Also thanks for putting everything together love the vid man👍
  • Amazing. Video. Thank you so much for making this! I had no idea!!
