Rhapsody in Maize and Blue, featuring U-M Gershwin Piano

Published 2014-10-06
This Friday, October 10 at 8:30 p.m. (free) in Hill Auditorium hear for the first time in concert the fully restored U-M George Gershwin Piano. This 1933 Steinway was owned and played by George Gershwin in his Manhattan apartment. We will celebrate the generous gift of this instrument to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance with a gala performance featuring students from across our performance programs, including Musical Theatre, Voice, Jazz and Improvisational Studies, Instrumental Performance, and Dance. The concert concludes with a reading of the first draft of the new critical edition of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in its original 1924 jazz orchestration and edited by Ryan Banagale in conjunction with the George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition. See record.umich.edu/articles/u-m-unveil-historic-geor… for more information.

That symphony orchestra at the University of Michigan is simply fabulous. It won the American Prize and a Grammy for best operatic recording (along with voice performance students at the School of Music, Theatre and Dance) a couple of years ago. Bravo!
