Dozens of people in North Portland are protesting a nearly 50% rent increase. It's their latest effort to get the city to change laws so they don't become homeless. After the package aired, Portland City Commissioner Dan Ryan responded to KGW with a statement. You can read Ryan's statement in the article linked below.

  • Let’s do some math. Her rent is going up by $403, which is a 43% increase so her base was $937. This woman is complaining that her rent is going up to $1340…. The fact that she was ever paying under $1000 in a nice complex like that is shocking.

“I have a 4 year old daughter and I work full time” and your husband?

Seems like a of entitled people to me. $4,200 is not enough to move anywhere in Portland? Well, then maybe you use the money to move out of Portland to a place that is cheaper and within your budget. What they are really saying is we want to live in Portland and we want you to pay for it.
  • You’re not entitled to a low rent. One of the women in this story has lived there for 9 years! This is literally what happens when the government says “don’t pay your rent” for the last year and a half. What did you think was going to happen. These people think they should be able to live in a state of the art apartment for well below what hard working portlanders pay for the same. My tax dollars SHOULD NOT GO TO PAY FOR ABLE BODIED ADULTS.

Entitlement will always come back to bite ya
  • Hmmm , the part about $4,200 to move? Sounds like a somewhat generous compromise. That’s first and last , plus deposit.

How long has that rent been unchanged? Is THAT fair? That place is still way cheaper than any place you’ll find in Portland. Two increase in 12 years? Boo boo?
  • These people want to fight for justice for low income people, yet vote for all the taxes that make their homes LESS affordable. ?????

Nice. Glad to see this dumpster fire of a city hasn't slowed down with their self inflicted and completely preventable immolation. The psychology degree is definitely going to help

This isnt just Portland it is nationwide. Its called inflation. You cant expect to cheat out prices. Just like how gas was way cheaper 10 years ago and economists said we were spoiled by not having this happen earlier. I still feel Portland is priced fair for a major city on the west coast. Just compare to other west coast cities with a similar population. But best of luck for these people fighting for what they believe in.

If their rent increase gets paid by the city, I will demand that my rent also be subsidized or no one gets subsidized!!!
  • @tracys169
They also increase the property tax every year...add that to the 2 years during rent moratorium, if the owner of those buildings don't try to recoup their losses, people are sorely mistaken. Not a renter here, but the pinch of property tax being raised annually in that amount the lady was talking about every time, is just insane. I fear that one day, I would be taxed out of my house. Anyway, this is why we're saving to move away from Portland.
  • @464588
lady 4200 can easily get you out of Portland idk why you'd wanna stay after this
  • @RyanRuark
What do you bet the building owner got a tax break when they put it up, too?
  • It's called inflation and ever increasing property taxes. Add the fact it is a business. They're not in it to lose money. These tenants expect everyone else to subsidize their lives.
