I’ve just received the new Canon R8 and it seems to be a great little camera so far. In this video I confirm that the photo and video image quality between the R8 and R6 II is identical with no difference in processing. I explore some differences between the camera such as build, handling, speed, overheating and stabilisation.

James, have now watched several of your videos, each better than the next. Super helpful, thank you.

Great comparison James as always precise and too the point.
  • Your videos are always awesome. You go straight to the important points.

Great review! Just picked up the R6ii. Can't wait for it to arrive. Both the R8 and R6ii are on sale now for anyone looking.

Thank you for making this video! So detailed info and clear to understand, and the comparisons!😊
  • As a photographer, I got the Canon EOS R8 because I've owned and used my Canon EOS 5D Mark III for 8 years now and given they discontinued DSLR production and have all the EF lenses I need, this was the perfect upgrade. It was a no brainer. I made the jump because although I have a SONY FDR AX100E if I wanted to shoot 4K, it meant that if I was out doing photography, it was cumbersome switching between the two and due to that I more often than not didn't bother. Now with 4K built in I can simply switch between the two, and if I wish to shoot professional video, I would use a tripod or would invest in a gimbal. I can't think of any reason, however for requiring shooting near 1/4000th of a second, unless it was on holiday, a bright sunny day, seldom would I ever. Wildlife shooting I've done in the past has largely been using a shutter speed between 1/1000th to 1/2000th. If there's anything that really stands out, however, going from 5D Mark III to this EOS R8, it's the autofocus, it's insane, and as someone pushing into pet photography with a bit of experience what that's like with a pet running towards you, this is a big step up for me. My experience testing the low light is mind-blowing, if I tried pushing my DSLR 5D Mark III to 6,400 especially at night, oh, the grain noise is very noticeable, whereas on the EOS R8 I've tested it even above that and it handles low light very well. Amazed by the quality for the price, which is reasonable given that it has all the same features as the R6 Mark II but without certain things which isn't really a deal breaker. The battery life is pretty decent and no big deal changing over SD card if need be, which I highly doubt I would need to with a 128gb card.
  • Just wanted to say thank you. I've been leaning towards getting the R8 for awhile, and seeing just the comparison and some of your details I think it's just about sealed the deal for me. Thanks for making this!
  • @cuspofgreen
I really appreciate that you made a great comparison video of these 2 cameras. I watched this video right after watching another video comparing the two where I learned how similar they are, but I was leaning toward the Mark II because in that video the photographer made it seem much better due to the image stabilization when shooting video. Your comparison of that was much more detailed and actually got me thinking I might prefer the R8, which is great news because the price point is more right for me! As the other guy said, "glass, glass, glass," so if I go with the R8 I'll be able to use the difference to buy a great lens! Thank you 🙏🌍
  • @drdimento
Thank you so much for this comparison. That battery, ergonomics of the rear dial, and overheating eliminate the R8 which I was going to get because of the two cameras sharing the same sensor and same processor. Thus, now it's between the R6m2 and R5 / R5c
  • @gianni2272
I bought the r8 and I am so happy with it. It is my second camera. It does have flaws, but buying a camera is all about making compromises I learned, and I have to say there is nothing I am missing so far.
  • @vibrasieve
i visit this video again, this is really a good video for me before i buy the camera
  • Great video. Do you know if the R6II still suffers for indoor banding with electronic shutter?
  • @rekster9
Thank you for the great comparison! I'm looking to do a lot of 180fps shots for slo-mo shots of my dog playing. Will the R8 overheat at 180fps, 1080p? I'd prefer the more portable size for hiking, but if I'm doing a lot of video as well I'm wondering if the R6MII would be a better choice.
