Police crack down on Istanbul protests

Published 2013-06-01
A major security operation is under way in the Turkish city of Istanbul to quell anti-government protests. Demonstrators and riot police have clashed for the second day as anger with the ruling AK party grows. Thousands of people have also taken to the streets in the capital, Ankara, and other major Turkish cities. Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh reports from Istanbul.

It is hard to believe that this event gets so little media attention. It is a very unprofessional way of dealing with protestors. What their government sees should make them go down ASAP to stop this country from falling apart.

Is this why every single TT on Twitter were in Turkish a couple of hours ago?
  • But no! The more people of media that see what's going on around the world, the more the ordinary people hear about it.

actually, when did the US police treat its own civilians like this last time?

She's choking on tear gas... let her go from reporting. Sad.
  • They would if the protests were non-violent and non-threatening as they were and largely still are in Gezi Park and Taksim square

If the military isn't going to topple the government this time, let's hope that the people can. That would be a good turn for democracy.

Thank you for that. And the authoritarianism of the Turkish regime is a very significant part of what these protests are about ... the park was merely a trigger. I was in Taksim and Besiktas today. Not surprisingly where there were no police (Taksim) there was an entirely peaceful protest. Where there was a police presence (with theır water cannons and tear gas) it was getting ugly. Turkish people are protesting to protect their secular constitution ... They need support Not sarcasm or scorn!
