Eddy Zhong, successful technology entrepreneur, dives into the truth behind our K-12 education system. Eddy strongly believes that the education system diminishes creativity and confines children to a certain path towards success. He contends that kids are taught to believe college is a necessary step in life and that it is mandatory to achieve one's goals. His talk challenges the commonly held beliefs of our entire education structure. Eddy is the founder of Leangap, a summer program that helps high school students start their own companies

Eddy is an aspiring technology entrepreneur and the founder of Blanc, a smart-watch company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His ideas have been featured in numerous publications and he is passionate about empowering youth to think differently. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Education is when you learn from your mistakes School is where you get mocked for your mistakes

Teachers: School is your second home Also teachers: Don't act like this, you're not in your home

He was 16 when he made this speech. Now I'm 16 thinking... How did I end up losing interests in so many dreams? Why did I stop reading the books that I wanted to? When did I think learning is boring? It's all school; Takes away our time from creativity, makes us care more about our marks in a paper, makes us chase government jobs when there are other jobs we can do. Thank You Eddy Zhong for this speech!

Once in primary school, we were taught a certain method to divide sums. I got told off for doing it a faster way even though the answers were correct, and I had to solve the problems their way. Not only schools kill creativity, but it kills confidence and breeds mental health struggle too.
  • As a school hater,I cam comfirm that school is killing student's creativity and forcing to learn useless information

“No one has ever changed the world by doing what the world has told them to do.”
  • Things schools should teach: Emotional intelligence Critical thinking Problem solving Understanding and Filing Taxes and why they exist Finding your passions and using them the ways that you want to use them, the ways that work for you Figuring out and truly tapping into your potential and using all of it in the ways you actually want to, the ways you feel comfortable with. I know there’s more.
  • My teacher literally destroyed my dream to be an artist. She basically said you can never be an artist because you don’t paint/draw using basic rules. And she was right, I never became an artist, because she killed it in me.

I learned English fluently watching cartoon network rather than learning in school
  • This is a great conversation to have. I, as a parent, witnessed the creativity being taken from 1 of my kids. A straight A student who lost points on something for "being too creative". I saw the light in their eyes start to dim that day and it broke my heart. That was the day that started me down a path of homeschooling not 1 but 3 creative children. 💯

This is why I’m so grateful that my parents let me do what I loved. People say there is no money in art, but I’m 19 years old, I’m going to a community college for a certificate. I’m in a payed internship and I’m also doing freelance too on the side. You don’t have get a degree to be successful or even go to a big fancy college, just do what you love ❤️
  • My dad once explained to me that if I got good grades all the time, and if I already knew everything, I'd feel like there'd be no more room to grow or improve myself, so he taught me to always use a bad grade or report as a learning experience. That's very true and insightful, but why does my C in algebra and chemistry make me feel and look like a failure if all I need to do is "do better?" I can't even really find what it is I'm doing wrong with my work, and I'm constantly trying to play catch up so that I can at least understand what the rest of the kids in my class are talking about, and I find myself sacrificing my time to do what I really love and want to pursue, like drawing and music, because I feel a constant desire to not "fail" all my classes. Maybe it's my time management or my mental state, but school really feels like it screws kids over a lot of the time. The American education system needs to change to accompany kids' abilities to be creative, critical, and collaborative, instead of drilling into our brains that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Elementary school: think outside the box with creativity. Middle school: think on the edge of the box with a bit of creativity. High school: think inside the box with no creativity. Out of school: think outside the box with creativity. Hmm... that doesn't seem right. Where did the government go wrong with its education system
