Im a pretty recent subscriber and I usually dont comment but I really gotta say that you guys quickly grew to be my favorite youtube channel! The commentary style, all the information, editing, episode length and the awkward jokes from time to time really make this the best gaming show on yotube! Keep it up guys!

19:22 Awwwwwwww yeah. One of the very best damn compilations out there ever made. Always loved that it actually contained the first 4 Phantasy Star games since we got screwed out of the Phantasy Star Collection on Saturn

The PS2 is pretty much the king of compilations. 3 Midway collections, multiple SNK fighting game collections (the Samurai Shodown one is AWESOME), Intellivision Lives, Atari Anniversary Collection, Activision Anthology, the Mega Man collection, etc. I've made it a point to track them ALL down, too. Also, we've got the Rare Replay coming. JOY!

When I was young whenever I heard in Space Harrier "Welcome to the Fantasy Zone" I always pictured Fantasy Zone was what was happening on a tiny scale in the grass and stuff while Space Harrier was happening in the sky.

Fun Fact: The programmer of Taito Legends (Nicola Salmoria) actually uses the code from the Taito Legends series for emulation of the same games on MAME.  He was credited as "Programmer" & the PC version is basically MAME with Starforce protection on top.
  • @PhilShary
Bottom line: free unofficial emulation is better than emulation done by corporate cashgrabbers. That was expectable.

This is one of my favorite episodes so far, selfishly because I think so highly of compilations. I own many of the ones talked about here, with the Taito Legends and Capcom Classics Collection discs being some of my favorites. The Namco Museum discs for the original PlayStation really set the tone for future compilations, with game-specific exhibit halls (filled with artwork, documentation, and even looks at the PCBs) and pretty impressive stat-keeping to go along with decent emulation. Sadly, Namco Museum games lost the "Museum" features upon moving to later platforms. The Arcade's Greatest Hits series of compilation discs for the PlayStation were also pretty good, with extras like developer interviews added to the package. The Midway Collection 2 disc has Moon Patrol on it, which hasn't been seen on consoles since. When this series evolved into Midway Arcade Treasures for Gen6 consoles, we got even more great coin-ops that we hadn't yet seen on previous compilations. There have been other decent compilations as well, including the Activision Anthology for the PS2, Konami Arcade Classics for the PlayStation, and the SEGA Genesis Collection for the PS2. Hopefully, down the road, you might revisit this topic again. Thanks for putting this together!

[Coury] I used to buy a lot more compilations than I do now. One thing that irked me is that a lot of them used to put an ugly anti aliasing softening filter over the whole thing. Mega Man Anniversary Collection did this. Thankfully, they fixed those issues with the Mega Man X collection - several of the games on that collection actually run in 240p, which is great. That sort of thing is usually only saved for the M2 collections (like the Fantasy Zone one seen in this ep).

I bought Taito Legends 1 when otherwise crappy GameStop was clearing out Xbox inventory. I snagged it for 47 cents. So in total, I paid less than two cents per game on that collection. One of the only times I've ever walked into a GameStop and left satisfied.

I always come home drunk whenever a new Game Sack episode comes out. Let's just say the streak continues and I have no idea what Joe and Dave are saying but I like looking at old games as I pass out.
  • @RetroGeet
The PSX Namco Museums were brilliant. I think I spent as much time walking around the virtual museum as I did playing the games!

Game Sack has been the background music/soundtrack to my life for the past week. Seriously, I have gone from never hearing of this "show" to seeing 100+ episodes in no time flat. You guys should be on tv....
  • @Michirin9801
You guys should really make an episode on the GBA, the GBA has a big bunch of hidden gems that deserve more attention than they get, and I'd love to see Joe talking about the GBA's amazing hardware! Like for example the cartridges being able to hold up to 256 MEGA POWER!

5:38 Taito was a peanut butter and vodka vending machine manufacturer before getting into game development?!? I can't even wrap my brain around that right now.
  • @Octoate
Thanks a lot for mentioning the game Dragon Buster. I was searching for this game for many years, because I played it in my childhood and nobody else remembered it. Now I found it by accident :D.
  • Holy shit, I remember Taito Legends on the original Xbox, playing it when I was just six or seven. Used to play Continental Circus all the damn time.
  • I had plans to sleep but then GameSack and HappyConsoleGamer both uploaded half hour episodes. Fuck sleeping.

Another great episode. I apologize, but I thought you guys were hitting the bottom of the barrel with a compilation episode. But I shouldn't have doubted you since was this was, for me, one of your most enjoyable. A thoughtful, nuanced look at the technical and aesthetic qualities of a few I wasnt aware of. Awesome work. Couple notes. The PSP Capcom collection didnt seem to have that darkness issue. Also the Sega CD Revenge of Shinobi yell may be the best thing I've ever heard.

Thank you guys so much for this. I remember playing a certain arcade game so much when I was 6-7 years old, but I never could find out what game it was in my later years.  Now, I can relive all of the fun I had playing Rastan when I was little! :)

My favorite compilation (and likely all time favorite cartridge or disc) is Konami Collectors Series: Arcade Advanced for the GBA. Features my all time favorite game (Gyruss), the six games are high quality, and the games aren't emulated but instead rewritten from scratch with new features like multiplayer. It's on many people's GBA essentials list, and it's pretty cheap to get (usually between $3-6). Worth every penny.
