William of Cassingham AKA Willikin of the Weald, played a major role in the First Baron's War of 1215-17 when he and a guerrilla force of bowmen recruited from the Weald of Kent fought against the invading French Army of Louis VIII. Although scarcely remembered today, William may have served at least in part as the inspiration for the semi-legendary figure Robin Hood.

Robin Hood is a bunch of different guys. There's a documentary in YouTube about it.
  • Your content is a bright gem buried in the digits of the deep web. We need to push your viewership up!
  • You mentioned it covers Kent, I believe it more of it may actually be in Sussex and Cassingham is actually in Sussex. Love your videos and keep up the good work
  • Constantine, Alexander... why do all the Scottish kings around this time sound like they should be Greek or Byzantine?
  • I thought Ridley Scott's Robin Hood made up the French invasion of England but after watching this video it turns out that it was loosely based on First Baron's War of 1215-17.
  • the bowmen from the Weald remind me of the battld of Concord
  • @Nokard
Rise and rise again, until the lambs become the lions.
  • would it be possible to create a video about brian fitz-count, queen matilda's protector? cr.
  • Just perfect. Is Robin Hood the reason criminals are called hoodlums and they live in the hood ? I know you would know. Thanks agin for this brilliant slice of history.
  • King Harold should of waited in those woods for William the conqueror!
  • Lewes and Winchelsea are in Sussex not Kent. Very interesting to watch this.
  • I came here simply because I thought it peculiar that Wilikin resembles Robin Hood so much.
  • Ironic that our depictions all have him fighting John during as a usurper of Richard's throne, but here this partial inspiration for him was defending John and John's son.
  • A shame you forgot to show the Robin of 1980s tv-series Robin of Sherwood (ITV 1984 - 1986). The title song was by Clannad Robin (the Hooded Man).
