With the Marvel Cinematic Universe reaching its climatic conclusion to 10 years of serialised storytelling, Josh from Panels to Pixels takes a look at the Marvel Animated Series of the 90s; its history and how its legacy can still be felt in pop culture today.

From 1992 - 2000, eight shows across 253 episodes made up the Marvel Animated Universe, introducing a whole generation to the characters that would go on to dominate box offices worldwide.

They were: X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man Unlimited and Avengers United They Stand.

So dust off your video tapes, grab a bowl of breakfast cereal and get stuck in to this video essay/documentary/love letter to the cartoons of our childhood.

I remember Spiderman: The Venom Saga where we saw not just Spidey, Venom, and Carnage, but also Iron Man, War Machine, Baron Mordo, and Dormammu.

X-Men lore is so deep the show could have lasted another 5 years. Too bad it didnt

I always love looking at the old designs of the Marvel characters. They're just so classic

When I watched X-Men and Spiderman, I was blown away by the fact that the stories were almost exactly the same as the comic books I collected. They were all canon. Back then, the characters had not been "reinvented", "retconned" or rebranded for a younger generation. They were pure stories. And I was part of that. Like a story or a joke only you in the group can understand , because you were there...

$2.99 for some pizza, a soda, & a comic? The 90's were so pristine.

I was born in late 90's. In Turkey all these animated series aired early 2000's. And they were HUGE hits. I really want to rewatch all of them after this video. My childhood in 18 minutes.
  • It’s SO annoying that Blade doesn’t get his credit. It was his film that ushered in and begun the work of the MCU we have now. The OG X-Men and Spiderman continued the trend but it was Blade that ushered in a new age of awesome comic book films. Lets not forget that.

Damn I got chills when that Spider-Man theme kicked in! Good old days
  • @daworm0912
You forgot to mention Blade in Spiderman. That's how a lot of people knew him from when the movie came out.

X-Men TAS’ intro was ahead of its time. Nothing beats it.
  • i used to sprint back from school just so that I could reach home early enough watch X-men on tv, good times.
  • X-Men: The Animated Series was KING - in London in the 90's that had children and teenagers HOOKED. Spider-man was a fantastic follow-up and I really enjoyed The Incredible Hulk.

I will always remember that episode in Spider Man where he met Stan Lee. Even as a little kid it was a mindblowing moment for me. Also that one episode in Iron Man where War Machine is having a flashback of his little brother fucking drowning on screen. That has stayed with me until adulthood.

Marvel should remaster the 1994 Spider-Man Animated Series in 1080p at the very least.
