Episode 102

Willow is a surprisingly good Action RPG for the NES! it looks a lot like the Legend of Zelda, and it features that same great sword swinging action. Beyond that, this game has a significantly different feel to it - Instead of solving puzzles, its more about navigating mazes, and fighting monsters to level up.

The game is very loosely based on the 1989 Willow movie directed by Ron Howard with a story by George Lucas. You might think that Lucas Arts would make this game, but it was actually developed by a top team at Capcom!

So how did this game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:

* Where to find EVERY SWORD and SHIELD!

* The SECRET SHORTCUT that lets you skip a huge chunk of the game!

* EASY ways to LEVEL UP FAST!

* Where to find EVERY MAGIC SPELL!

* How to unlock the DEBUG MODE, and how to use it to beat the game in less than 5 minutes!

* A secret GLITCH to MAX YOUR LEVEL in minutes!

* EASY ways to defeat EVERY BOSS, even BAVMORDA herself... AND MORE!

Thanks for watching!

Really like your incorporations of the Nintendo Power art and maps. Those sidebars are so nostalgic and great.

I asked for Willow as a kid quite a few times, but never got or played it. I’ll live vicariously through this video today!
  • @catfud
I love this game. It still holds up today imo. A lot of great childhood memories with this one too
  • @KarmaJolt
If anyone has ever played Astalon: Tears of the Earth (a fantastic 8 bit Metroidvania) you might remember a certain cutscene that is basically just an homage to the movie Willow. I didn’t realize it at first because I saw the movie after I played Astalon, but it’s great!
  • Love this game. I remember saving up my lawn mowing money to buy it. Took a few weeks for me to beat. But I’m sure there a lot of secrets and tricks that I missed. Looking forward to watching this whole episode.
  • OMG 😳 I'm so glad you did this. Willow was a great game despite having nothing to do with the movie. I found it hard as a kid and didn't know what to do. But the RPG elements were solid. BTW your pup is getting big. Love the dogs.

Willow's family restoring his HP is the wholesome-est thing I've seen this week. :) Dude, have a safe and Happy Holiday season, thank you as always for the brief history lesson in each video, and thanks for all your hard work.

I just want you to know: I appreciate the hard work you put into these strategy guide videos. You are THE man, keep up the stellar work. Classic games will never die!
  • I was so pumped to see this in my YouTube news feed! This is one of my favorite NES games, and was one of the first ones I repurchased after selling most of my video game collection off in the late 2000s early 2010s. It's not a perfect game, but it is so fun and engrossing, and of course being made by Capcom, it has a phenomenal soundtrack and overall excellent presentation for an NES game.
  • I've never been able to beat this game, but I have great memories of watching my grandmother play it. She was also the one who played the movie for me since I was wee. Hope you're enjoying the new show, if that's your thing!
  • @Tannlore
I still remember playing this game as a kid, guide in hand, and loving every minute of it. So many great memories.

I just beat this again like 2 weeks ago. Playing through Dragon Warrior 3 now. This will be my unwinding tonight when I get home.Cant wait.
  • This is a nice surprise, Willow is such and underrated game for the NES.
  • @biggsweaty
Wow. I just played through this for the first time during November. What timing! Heard about the reboot show as well...not too atuned to whats going on with tv nowadays.....anyway, this is a great game. I would have loved this back in the day. Not that I dont now!

1:18:41 The monster you described in this segment about the spell of renewal: it always had a special place in my heart ever since my dad showed me the movie. I adore big puppet monsters, and that grotesque beast was no exception. It's macabre origin combined with their TERRIFYING appearance made that scene particularly memorable!
  • I loved this game growing up. Took my cousin and I a good 3 years to figure it out. We had no manual or guides to go off of. Man, getting to Bavmorta without enough magic the first time was soul crushing. As an adult the only thing that bothers me now is that they spelled Saoirse's name "Sorsha". Oof...
  • Thank you brother for making weekend mornings something to look forward to again. You just know which games to bust out, and the exhaustive info and secrets are fantastic. Keep on keepin' on!
  • Great to see you cover this one. I never really got super far in this game, but it's EASILY in my top five when it comes to music. Songs from this still pop into my head more than 20 years later. Only Castlevania, Mega Man 2, and a few Sunsoft games share that dubious honor...
