Daily reminder that YOU ARE AWESOME. 😎👏
  • I love how the style of this channel's videos has never changed, all the videos have looked the same for years, if you watch a random video, you probably wouldn't be able to guess which year it's from without looking at the upload date.

A receiver includes an integrated amplifier which is a combination of a preamplifier and a power amplifier. I think the additional preamp you are referring to is the magnetic cartridge preamp for the turntable. A receiver is called so because it is an integrated amplifier combined with a tuner. There are also stand alone integrated amplifiers that do not include tuners. They are not receivers yet you can still connect all the other devices including a stand alone tuner.
  • what you have to keep in mind is that many systems have the preamp already built in, if you then connect an additional one, the signal can become too strong, so there can be destortions and the system can be damaged
  • I have a 1979 Pioneer SX-980 receiver. I bought it shortly before the pandemic hit and it's a beast!

Yay new upload! Thanks for always informing us!

New to vinyl collecting and the channel. Love the straight forward non pretentious information about equipment etc. Happy to learn more about the cool hobby without having someone tell me my $500 turntable is entry level and I need a better one. Thanks for all the helpful info!
  • Good video, but an amplifier has most of what you attribute to receivers. It is a receiver because it has a radio tuner section that can receive over the air radio signals. You used to be able to buy separate amplifiers and tuners, and the tuner went through the amplifier like any other component. It made sense to integrate both of these devices into a single receiver unit.

great to see a new vid from you! hope to see more frequent videos soon

My dad had a Harman/Kardon 330B tucked under the guest bed for at least 20 years. He and I dug it out a few months ago, gave it a good dusting and plugged it into our setup (RT-85 + pair of 2-way Fluance Sigs). Buttery goodness. 👌

I got into vinyl when Linkin Park put out the 20th anniversary edition of Hybrid Theory. Since I bought my equipment I have been continuously impressed by the quality/$ of the Edifier R1280D active speakers l paired with my Fluance RT85 (+ Fluance pre-amp.) Seriously good speakers for the CDN$190 I paid for them.
  • I've been using the same NIKKO NR-719 receiver amp for over 30 years. I've kept it maintained, and it's been phenomenal.

I had always used vintage receivers (The Fisher 125, Hitachi SR-604, etc) but got tired of the aging potentiometers and switches constantly needing attention so last fall I picked up an Onkyo TX-8220 to use with my TT (Pioneer DJ 500PXL), dual cassette deck and cd changer (also both Pioneer) and I've been pretty impressed by it. The "A" speakers are a pair of Fluance SX6W's and I ran wires from the "B" connectors to the high gain audio inputs of a powered 10" Polk Audio subwoofer and it absolutely rocks. The Onkyo accepts banana plugs for all of its speaker terminals which was another plus for me and is how I have it wired. I have many tube radios I've restored to operation for that warm tube sound and someday I'll get a tube amp for my component system but until then I'm very satisfied with my current setup.
  • 2 Weeks ago I got the audio Setup from my Patents (one Turntable (Technics dc Servo Automatic Turntable sl b210), 4 loudspeakers, 1 reciver (Technics Stereo Synthesizer Receiver sa gx 130) and one CD Player from Technics, which are from the good old 80s. And now i am Hearing their CDs an Vinyl from Metallica, Billy Talent and more, i am so Happy that peoples Care about Vinyl in 2022. Thanks for yout Help :)
  • My setup consists of a record player, a pre amp, and my Sonos Play 5. I would love to have a bigger setup like the one you have but I live in an apartment and what I have suits me fine for now. Thanks for the video!

It's probably worth mentioning that it's not actually what is normally called a pre-amp that's used for turntables, it's specifically a phono stage pre-amp. That then connect into either a receiver line level input, or an integrated amplifier, (both of these types contain a normsl pre-amp and an amplifier) or if you have an amplifier that doesn't contain a built in normal pre-amp, you would connect your phono stage pre-amp to the normal pre-amp, which then connects to the main amplifier. As you mentioned though, some receivers and integrated amplifiers also contain a dedicated phono stage pre-amp built in, in which case you would forgo connecting your turntable to a separate phono stage pre-amp and just connect it directly to the decicated phono connection on your receiver or integrated amplifier. To confuse matters further, there are different types of turntable styli and cartridges. Moving magnet, (MM) and moving coil, (MC). Most phono stage pre-amps, including those built into receivers and integrated amplifiers, have the ability to properly boost the signal from MM type cartridges, but many can't sufficiently boost the signal from most MC type cartridges. That's because most MC cartridges give a weaker signal to begin with and need additional signal boosting. If you intend to use an MC type cartridge, do additionsl research before buying a phono stage pre-amp, to make sure that it has the ability to boost MC cartridges. To confuse matter even more, there are different types of MC cartridge too, which produce different signal levels and can often require different boost settings on the phono stage pre-amp. Obviously if you're just starting out, there's a lot to consider, but don't let that put you off. Just do a bit of research and ask lots of questions. If you are just stsrting out though, I'd recommend starting with MM type cartridges, because they are far cheaper to buy, the phono stsge pre-amps tend to be cheaper and you'll likely find them easier overall to get set up. Enjoy.
  • Great education as always brother. Glad you are doing very well.
  • Just found your channel, and at 39, and starting the venture into vinyl….just picked up the at60 xbt!
