Artist's Retreat by architect Palinda Kannangara is a split level house with a close connection to the natural environment. The ground floor has a feeling of garden pavilions, the living and dining/studio space, without doors or windows, are settled in between gardens. This creates a feeling of living and working outdoors as the boundary between interior and exterior is erased. The upper floor is more private and secure with three bedrooms, a living space and 20 X 20 feet (7 X 7 meters) rooftop lily pond.

Has this architect and his creation, this house ever participate in an international architectural contest? The house is everything! Beautiful, functional, safe, natural...

Beautiful Architecture. For the longest time, we have admired Sri Lankan Architects. We see a beautiful influence of Bawa's philosophy manifested here in serenity. Love from Bangladesh.
  • Very beautiful and wonderful really cool place,I can remember when I was in Bandarawela same like this, it's nice to see a place like this again, wonderful creation
  • being a german gardendesigner, floristmaster, connected to auroville; my Statement: I have to admire that house. it is not hopeless , redundant luxury. it serves the essential Needs of a human being, may be one can do it even a bit more ecological (mud, earthstone) , but the design with all the penetrating nature is great. a sophisticated, decent home.
