Set is a enigmatic, archaic and enigmatic god of the ancient Egyptians. At the same time the murderer of Osiris and the contending defiler of Horus, he is also lord of the Ombos, god of the frontier and protector of the sun god Ra, battling with the chaos god Apophis at the bow of the Barque of Millions. Let's trace the history, development and eventual demonization of Seth. From his inauguration of death, his veneration by the family of Rameses, synthesis with Ba'al and Yahweh and his final role in the dark magic of the Greek Magical Papyri.

So you're saying that his nature was not Seth in stone?

As a deity of confusion, the age of the internet may very well be the age of Set.

This is who I feel like ATM. I am currently homeless, live ng in my car, not one single person Im close to right now, walking through life in these hot summer days, feeling chaotic and ancient. But the thing is, I've found balance, greater truth, wisdom of life, I've found myself and I've been able ilto dissolve the delusions I was living in. I have 3 interviews in the next three days, and have learned a wise lesson about conserving wealth, knowledge, and other resources. Thank you esoterica❤

In some of the more extreme American Evangelical communities, Cain is portrayed as Set. He wandered over to Egypt after killing Abel and set up shop as a king, even stealing the name of Seth. Heathen Egyptians then deified him. There’s even an illustrated book. I think it’s ironic that their mythological mashup is introducing the kind of chaos and disorder Set may have approved of.

If the Egyptian gods were the Muppets, Seth would be Gonzo.

The fact that Sutekh just got brought back to Doctor Who TODAY, the day you uploaded this, after nearly 50 years of not appearing again... Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey, stuff?

Between Esoterica, Doctor Who, and the YouTube algorithm, Set has been popping up on my YouTube feed a lot this weekend. He must have hired a new agent recently.

You had me laughing for a full minute at the David Lynch reference. I needed that, thanks!

Lol. Can confirm ibis are universally known as "bin chickens" in Australia.

There is a translated version of the Seth v Horus coom-off where Horus catches his uncles spooge in secret, sneaks into Seth's cabbage patch, then whips it onto his favourite tossed salad. Next time they're in court, Seth uses magic to make the goo talk to prove that it's in Horus' ass to embarrass him, but when the voice starts coming from Seth's own stomach, well, he just looks a bit silly. Then everyone laughs. 10/10, best mythology.

Finally, a proper episode on my favourite Egyptian deity! I've always seen him as one of the most misunderstood gods, and perhaps the pioneer of what has later become the Lion King trope, with hundreds of remakes of the same story: younger brother of king usurping the throne through treacherous means, and eventually losing it to his nephew, the rightful heir. However, the original myth is a lot richer and more complicated than that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that in the earliest myths, there are some references of him actually being Anubis's father, as well as some mention of him erecting a huge pillar that allowed Osiris to ascend into heaven. The dichotomy between his fertility and toxic nature makes sense if we think about the desert as his dominia: there is also life in the desert, but it's a harsh environment than more often than not will unalive you. Truly fascinating. Thank you so much for this episode!

I'm absolutely certain that Seth is supposed to be an anteater and I'll wave my arms maniacally while cackling at anyone who disagrees.

The timing of this video is wild, Sutekh (an old villain based on Set) just returned on Doctor Who today.
  • @clayashford9334
Seth seems to embody a similar trope to the Hercules or Enkidu. A figure on the periphery of civilization and order. They are all embowered by their wildness and uniquely suited for combating chaos. Frightening due to their otherness and lack of civility, but also alluring for the same reason. The madman you just hope is on your side. Edit: you could probably throw Loki in there too. People have always like edgy bad boys.
  • There's a wonderful synchronicity with events in this week's Doctor Who and this video.....
  • I love that this came out the same day Doctor Who brought back my favorite villan Sutekh the destroyer!!

I just realized the set-animal is the was-scepter. From now I'll think of it as the chaos stick. Great video.
