Getting Ready for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth! Dirge of Cerberus Review and Canon Discussion!

Published 2024-02-27
In only a couple of days, we'll finally have Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. My excitement has hit a fever pitch, so much so that I even voluntarily played Dirge of Cerberus for the first time! I kid, I kid, I actually ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Let me know what you thought of the Dirge, as well as the rest of the expansive Final Fantasy VII canon in the comments below!

The love story between Vincent and Lucretia is heartbreaking. We need to talk more about this privately or on a podcast! Great video, Branden! 😄
  • @missmandia
So excited to see you cover Dirge of Cerberus! Also, this music arrangement is fantastic! Great work as always 😄

Growing up, I wanted to play this game SO badly because it seemed right up my alley, but I never got around to it! You’re making me wanna go back now and give this game a chance!
  • @KeitaroE37
It’s nice this Trails YouTuber is branching out to more niche titles:)

Great discussion! I am trying to finish up at least one game before I commit to Rebirth! I'm so excited!

As a Vincent fanboy, i understand. But when i was a kid, and this game originally came out, i was over the moon. day 1 played it. It really wasn't as bad as everyone said he was. It has a really unique rpg, arcade shooter feeling to it. 6/10. I never knew about those books. Might have to sit through one or two in the future. Thanks for sharing the information about that.

What an interesting but appropriate way to have a chance to review this game in prep for FF7 Rebirth

0:17 Let me add to your hype and unrealistic expectations Final Fantasy VII Rebirth not only has a higher metacritic score than the original, it is tied for 3rd highest rated JRPG on metacritic .

Willing to read, watch, and replay old stuff, if it means avoiding games in the last year >.>; dirge was fun and different, and totally looking forward to the new release later this week.

Fun fact: This was actually my first Final Fantasy VII game that I played, and I played it when it came out. I'm just now playing the original Final Fantasy VII if that means anything. Before currently playing Final Fantasy VII all I had done with Final Fantasy VII was play Dirge of Cerberus and watch Advent Children. And I had no idea what was going on in either but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I played DoC a few years after it came out. I remember thinking it was fun. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the story from memory, but I remember thinking that, despite how badly it reviewed, I liked it :D
  • @cogsworth-
Super hyped for Rebirth too and I do love your vids but couldn't watch this one as not played Cerberus and don't want spoilers :D
  • This is one of the games that I missed back in the day. My oldest daughter was born that same year so life went crazy for me and, apparently, children are a priority (or so they say 😂). I really need to pick up a used PS2 and grab some of the old gems on that system. I’ve heard they’re actually going down in price lately. Might be a good time to invest. 🤔

Yes! I agree so much! I played it back when it came out, and it was great then. It made something somewhat vague in OG FF7 crystal clear. It introduced some good new characters, namely the scientist woman and her sister. It gave more of a spotlight on the somewhat neglected characters of the original. It covered something else instead of just covering the Nibleheim reactor stuff for the thousandth time. It had solid gameplay even though you only used the pistol and ignored the machine gun/sniper rifle. I think Vincent was the right choice over Barret and Irvine (from FF8). I think history will be kind to Dirge of Cerberus, once the dust has settled and everything. Personally, what I think is great about Dirge of Cerberus is how clear and concise it is with its story. None of this time-travelling to change the past (or is it the future?). Just a nice, straight-forward sequel. I worry the remake/stealth-sequel is getting too convoluted for its own good, and that we might be heading to an ending where Cloud just wakes up and is like "I had the weirdest dream. You were there, and you were there, and you were there" lol.

Great video again. I have to admit that I haven't really followed the extra lore that is available, and given the reception Dirge of Cerberus had in the day, I probably didn't think much of it. Would I play it now... too much on the backlog. Looking forward to the next video.

DoC is an alright game. Played, beaten and owned it when it came out.

Decades of lore, nostalgia and last minute surprise censor patches 😂 Conflicted as I am with some aspects of the remake, I can't wait to play rebirth. Dirge of Cerberus I always veered on the edge of playing it, but never actually got around to it. A few years ago I came across it often on used game stores but never took it with me. I like the laser sword robot girl though...
  • I love this game I truly don't get why folks hate it. It's fun and wacky in all the best ways. My hype for this game was insane. I preordered and still have that copy. It's a crazy time right now because from FFXII onward my love for the series cooled. XII wasn't for me, and XIII (and it's sequels) were fine but disappointing. FFXIV is an MMO and those suck. FFXV was 10 year hype only to be saddened that it was a rushed and slightly unfinished game. Remake was captivating in a lot of ways but suffered from the hallways of boredom. It was a let down that we couldn't freely explore Midgar. FFXVI (AKA FF May Cry) was fun enough but it was too long for the one-trick combat system (Plus it got tedious at the halfway point). Rebirth is looking to be the culmination of all the previous games in the series' history. I cannot wait.

You are right re: Vincent btw - pretty underwhelming character in OG FF7 IMO. Just sort of edgy without much of a character arc - contrast that with many of the other characters that come to their own epiphanies and show real growth.
