i love how pearl and frye are directly insulting each other but marina and shiver are justr being really passive agressive

this song becomes funnier when you keep in mind that off the hook are globally renowned pop stars, and deep cut are a really good local act. no wonder deep cut got BTFO'd lmao

For people who don't speak Southern Kindness, Marina is basically backhanding Shiver directly, everything she's saying is nearly the complete opposite unless she can tune it into an insult: • You're so kind! I love your vibe! - absolutely hates it, says it reeks • I can just learn so much from your style - "You know fashion dos and don'ts? You're a don't." • Glad you approve-Your Praise has left me moved. - "Full Disrespect, who even asked you for your opinion." • Thanks to your notes, I'll find my own groove - "Your insults have been received and placed in the trash as they belong." And to the whole Shiver saying wrap it up to Marina saying "i could do this all night", I took it as Shiver realizing she's outclassed but Marina being "nono, keep going, show me what you got.". Marina is challenging her lmao

People are saying Marina isnt catching Shiver's passive aggresiveness, but i get the impression that shes fully aware of it and simply isnt giving her the reaction she wants.

top 10 rappers Eminem is afraid to diss

To the people saying that Marina isn't getting Shiver's sarcasm, please pay attention to her tone she's being JUST as sarcastic and sassy with her answers (and I love her for that, octo on octo violence)
  • Frye: "You suck. You suck and your jordans are fake and you're a loser. lmao" Pearl: "Check out my wife." drops mic
  • @Ra1ny_day
Fun fact: big man was actually supposed to have a spot here, but he kept spitting compliments instead of insults so he was eventually cut
  • @takemi_914
Pearl: "Haha, no friends" Frye: TODAY'S YAPPING LEVEL: YAPPASTROPHIC

I am Japanese. Silva is modeled after Kyoto people's personalities. People in Kyoto say this when they want their customers to go home early. "Let's eat together at my house." What it really means is "I'm busy, so please go home early."

Weak- Shiver and Marina are being kind to each other Strong- Shiver is being passive agressive and Marina doesn't get it Reality - Marina is well aware, she's just being passive kind back
  • @somethingbanter
Marina taking the passive aggressive insult from shiver about her voice quality, refusing to acknowledge it and being nice while also copying her exact vocal cadence, and then shrugging off shiver calling her a little copycat. Incredible.
  • @sfx.1355
Translation for people who doesn’t understand Kyoto language, what shiver is saying is: “Even your fans are tired of your annoying voice” “Your style is BASIC and childish” “LEAVE. You’re wasting my time”
  • @AAAAAAA-lq6ku
Very clear evidence for Marina actually knowing what's going on and is being sarcastic, is the fact she INSTANTLY cut off shiver when she talks about it being late. Marina is legitimately going "Oh, you scared? You gonna cry? Gonna run? Come back here I ain't done with you"
  • @cl0ver_f1eldz
not frye dissing pearls yapfest 😭 also, that "WAIT YOUR TURN!" was amazing BWHAHAHA
  • @mu3191
Context: Shiver has a stereotypical Kyoto personality where they use a lot back handed compliments and passive aggression. (Or at least that’s how her dialogue is written in Japanese) It’s not really working on Marina, who’s very earnest. Pretty fun dynamic there.

Frye really said "Pearl your yapping levels are atrociously high"

My favorite part about this song is how Off the Hook is schooling Fire & Ice, literally teaching them how it's done. Starting with Pearl v Frye Pearl opens slow and simply, taunting Frye into losing her temper. Frye's a great performer, but lacks presence, and Pearl is great at getting a reaction. By cutting her off, she forces Frye to be more aggressive and more vocally forward, which Pearl acquiesces to, going at Frye's pace, matching the rhythm of the song like Frye does, fishing for the Marina insult with the "where's your buddy". Then, when fry does try and take a pot-shot, Pearl uses the advantage to hype Marina up with the fastest and hardest line in the song, baiting one more insult to transition to the chorus (sung by Marina primarily) with even more hype. Pearl goes through the entire verse showcasing how Frye is out of her league, while demonstrating how to set up a killer song: play along, hype yourself up, and target you attacks specifically to get the best reaction. You come across as more confident and more competent through this. Then we get to Shiver v Marina In contrast to Pearl, Shiver starts horribly. She tries to lean into her country gimmick by passive-aggressively mocking Marina while making fun of her singing style, but does so in such a way that both sounds terrible and makes her seem less aggressive. In a rap battle. Again, terrible start. Marina takes advantage of this by keeping the vibes going and showing off at the same time, countering the passive-aggressive lines with her own, more subtle ones, all while singing the same tune in her usual, inkredible, fashion. As such, she not only sounds better, and states she can do whatever Shiver does, but better, she also retroactively has Shiver making a fool of herself, which Shiver doubles down on by telling Marina to stop copying her, as Marina had baited her to do. Marina mostly obliges, by singing a more complex and auditorially interesting line than Shiver's more by-the-beat verse, flourishing her lines with a soulful high note before a syncopated stop at the end, all while maintaining that passive aggressive style (it also functions as a "yeah, I am better at this than you are" in conjunction with the "stop copying me" line). The moment Shiver says she's heard enough, referencing the time while also mocking Marina's long-winded verses (finally using that passive aggressive style to her advantage), Marina drops the facade, sounding stronger and directly telling Shiver that she ain't done, only for Pearl to interject with a "had enough yet?" simultaneously mocking Shiver's earlier line about it getting late, playing to her attention-seeking persona and heavy boasting, and disengaging Marina, which gives the impression that Marina was holding back the whole time and was about to let loose on a Shiver. This also reframes Shiver's earlier line as her giving up. Basically, Shiver got brutalized in this battle, and only has herself to blame. Meanwhile, Marina comes across as a genius to those who get it, and adorable to those who don't. She couldn't have come out of the verse looking bad. Effectively, Off the Hook used this as both a means of maintaining their own hype, while simultaneously needling at the new kid's flaws, and following with examples of how to effectively use their own styles, plus how to effectively rap battle. It also shows Off the Hook's skill both as a team and individually. Pearl can play the hypeman and abrasive teacher that she excels at, while Marina can be passive and throw ruthless counterattacks while still coming across as sweet. As a team, they run the conversation, with Pearl leading the tone, even when she's off the mic, and serving as the bridge to Marina, who dominates the song via her constant presence in the chorus and instrumentals. Everyone's mind is on them while Shiver and Frye don't even interact. Frye refuses to mention Shiver, even when brought up, while Shiver's verse is entirely focused on (unsuccessfully) dissing Marina. They come across as disoriented and isolated compared to their opponents, who work as well together as a married couple (which they might as well be). There's a reason everyone says Off the Hook wins in a landslide.

I love how they both realize Marina is Pearl's soft spot and target her. But as it turns out, the soft spot goes pretty hard herself.
