Located on the westernmost front of Continental Europe, Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is also one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens). In 1755 a massive earthquake, and subsequent tidal wave and fire, completely destroyed much of the Lisbon lower central districts.
