Broderick doesn't seem to get into a role often, but BOY does he hit it outta the park when he does.

Broderick has stated this is his favorite role, and he clearly poured his heart and soul into it. He thought it would be his breakthrough into more adult roles, but he really was never able to shake his teen movie status. At the time of its release, a lot of critics praised this movie but had difficulty accepting "Ferris Bueller" as a Civil War officer. Broderick has had a successful career: some real triumphs on Broadway and some very good films, but when he dies it will be: "Matthew Broderick known best for "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

"Look at how much of a threat I am to you! now send me to battle sir!" "Suicidal attack for you it is."

I think this was Broderick's best role and his best acting.
  • 0:56 I always liked the look on the major's face as he sat down like he's thinking "I'm gonna enjoy watching this go down" lol!

This is one of the greatest movies of all time.

A movie from the 1980s depicting people in the 1860s listening to harpsichord music from the 1690s. 🤣

0:58 I love the back and forth between Broderick and Gunton here. How it the insults start veiled and subtle, then become more apparent when Borderick's youthful ambition gets the better of him.
  • It's a shame that Bob Gunton is always cast as a villain. He's amazing.

This movie brought the best acting performance from Matthew Broderick
  • Punishment back then for military rule violations must have been pretty serious. The General seems to cave in once threatened with being reported, and earlier the Quartermaster almost had a heart attack when the Colonel was upset about the shoes .... Not to mention when Major Forbes threatened to bring the soldiers up on charges for the confrontation with the 54th their faces dropped.
  • Wow! Matthew Broderick looks very handsome and dashing in the role of Colonel Robert G. Shaw!
  • There is a massive bronze relief sculpture in Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian that...it is remarkable. The 54th is so...uniquely represented..and the likeness of Colonel Shaw and Matthew Broderick is UNCANNY, though done decades before. Colonel Shaw was thrown into a trench with his "colored" soldiers, but when g8ven the opportunity to have his remains returned to Boston, his mother said, "He died with his men." Well, we know where he got his mettle from. Years later, he was disinterred and buried on a family plot. God bless the memory of the 54th Massachusetts and an honorable man named Robert Gould Shaw, who gave them honor...and Glory. If you've not seen the frieze, you should. It might make you a better person.

Between Ladyhawke, Glory and Project X, I've always appreciated Matthew Broderick and the movies he starred in.

Having someone by the balls is a great way to get things done in life ..

"Sir, let me and my men go get shot to shit, or so help me, I will bring you down!" War is weird.

The actor playing Colonel Montgomery is a real musician, Cliff De Young. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was jamming on the harpsichord for real. Some of you might remember him from Flight of the Navigator as David Freeman’s father.
