Republican mayor bashes GOP, Donald Trump while speaking at Harris, Walz rally | LiveNOW from FOX

Published 2024-08-09
Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz are set to take the stage at a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona. One of the invited speakers at the rally is John Giles, the Republican mayor of Mesa - Arizona's third largest city. Giles, a "life-long" Republican, threw his support behind Harris and criticized Donald Trump during his remarks.

"The Republican party has been taken over by extremists that are committed to forcing people in the center of the political spectrum out of the party," Giles said. "So in the spirit of the great Senator John McCain, please join me in putting country over party and stopping Donald Trump."

Giles has a history of crossing political party lines. He was censured in 2022 by the Arizona Republican party for endorsing the Democrat Mark Kelly in his ultimately successful bid for the Senate.

Other Republicans have come out to endorse Harris, including Geoff Duncan, the former lieutenant-governor of Georgia, and the Christine Todd Whitman, the former governor of New Jersey.

The best way to get a Republican to vote for Harris is to hear directly from another Republican making the same choice👏👏🏻👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿.
  • I respect his courage for speaking in a crowd full of Democrat supporters. I know he’s not scared to call out his own party because he knows not all Republicans are MAGA and I know not all Republicans are Trump supporters. He knows he’s still getting support from true Republicans that are not brain washed by Trump and MAGA supporters.
  • I'm a registered Republican but will not vote for Ex-President this time because he is not a conservative, and he lacks the qualities necessary to be a President.

What a TRUE PATRIOT! Thank you Mayor!! Country over Party that is truly what this election is all about.

This man has a brain and thinks for himself, great mayor
  • I'm not American but I remember growing up watching Obama and McCain, then Romney, debating on TV in the UK. They were almost always polite, if a little sarcastic at times, towards each other. The mud-slinging debacle of modern American politics is honestly such a shame considering the level of respect that used to be shown across the aisle even during heated disagreements. It's good to see someone like Giles call for a return to mature discourse.

Now, if the Governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, would just come to his senses and take back his Trump endorsement, we could go back to respecting him, too.

Normal Republicans have opened their eyes and can finally see the danger of Trump and the MAGA crazies... we welcome anyone who values freedom and democracy, and now, happiness and joy:) 💙💙💙

"Morally and ethically bankrupt" 💯 He's so on point. Thank you Republicans for doing the right thing. Country over Party!!! 💙💙🇺🇸🇺🇸💙💙
  • I love seeing decent people that escaped from, or in his case, avoided the cult.
  • 😮 John Giles is a true American patriot. He puts his country first and over his political party. Respect.

Much respect from a former life-long Republican until 2017 went I couldn’t stand Trump or the Republican senators anymore due to all the lies and kissing Trump’s ass. This mayor is placing the state and the people over party and he knows that unless Maga candidates and Trump voted out over the next few cycles that they’re never gonna get their party back.
  • 😊John C. Giles (born 1959/1960) is an American politician serving as the 40th mayor of Mesa, Arizona.[1] A Republican, Giles previously served as a member of the Mesa City Council from 1996 to 2000. Giles was elected mayor of Mesa in a 2014 special election following the resignation of then-Mayor Scott Smith. This is what Republican John Giles said at the Harris/waltz Arizona rally You don't owe anything to a CANDIDATE THAT IS MORALLY AND ETHICALLY BANKRUPT. I COME FROM A DISTRICT THAT IS VERY SPLIT, MAYBE ONE THIRD INDEPENDENT, AND IT DOES TAKE A CERTAIN TYPE OF VOICE. YOU WANT TO CAST A WIDE NET BUT WHAT THE CAMPAIGN IS DOING RIGHT IS THERE SPEAKING TO THESE ISSUES THAT TOUCH ALL OF US. TALKING ABOUT INFLATION AND HOW WE CAN ATTACK IN A WAY THAT HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO ARE MIDDLE-CLASS BY HOLDING THE CORPORATE ENTITIES ACCOUNTABLE AND DEALING WITH THE PRICE GOUGING THAT WE ARE SEEING CONSISTENTLY YEAR AFTER YEAR. ALSO SPEAKING TO THE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE IN ARIZONA.TALKING ABOUT COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM AND THE AFFORDABILITY OFHOUSING, WE REALLY HAVE A CRISIS WITH HOUSING AFFORDABILITY AND THAT'S THE IMPORTANT THING. STAY ON MESSAGE TALKING ABOUT THESE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THE PEOPLE OF ARIZONA AND WE WILL CAST THAT WIDE NET AND ALLOW US TO PULL PEOPLE INTO THE CONVERSATION. WE ARE SO TIRED OF THE COUNTRY OF FEELING ALIENATED ALL THE TIME AND LEADING WITH NEGATIVITY AND THIS HATEFUL RHETORIC. I THINK CONTINUING TO BRING THE JOY AND SPEAKING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ABOUT THE ISSUES THAT MATTER TO THEM THE MOST IS THE WAY TO WIN. ANOTHER ISSUE THATIS IMPORTANT TO A LOT OF PEOPLE IS REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE AND TRUMP YESTERDAY SAID THAT ABORTION IS NO LONGER A QUOTE, BIG FACTOR IN ELECTIONS. ( moderator) I BRING THIS UP BECAUSE YOU SHARED YOUR OWN HEARTBREAKING ABORTION STORY ON THE FLOOR OF THE ARIZONA STATE SENATE. >> I THINK THAT IS A CREATIVE WISH LIST FOR DONALD TRUMP TO HOPE THAT THIS IS NOT An IMPORTANT ISSUE ANYMORE. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS YOU STILL HAVE A VERY LARGE PORTION OF THE ELECTORATE THAT IS CAPABLE OF GETTING PREGNANT AND IF THEY'RE NOT, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE'S FAMILIES AND PEOPLE'S FUTURES AND THOSE 4:01 CHOICES ARE IMPORTANT TO AMERICANS AND IT'S ABSOLUTELY GOING TO MATTER AT THE BALLOT BOX IN NOVEMBER. THIS ISSUE IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY. AS THESE RIGHTS ARE BEING STRIPPED IN INDIVIDUAL STATES, WE ARE NOT GOING TO FORGET ABOUT THAT.WE ARE STILL FIGHTING EVERY DAY TO RESTORE RIGHTS IN ARIZONA. THAT IS HAPPENING ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND WE ALL KNOW WHY. SO, THAT IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE A DRIVING FORCE IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP IT PART OF THE CONVERSATION, WHERE ITLONGS, AT THE FOREFRONT. >> WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE VICE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO DO TO WIN ARIZONA AGAIN? I THINK VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS NEEDS TO COME BACK AND SEE US, I KNOW THAT SHE WIL. , I'M SURE THAT SHE WILL. SPENDING TIME HERE AND SHOWING UP FOR US MATTERS

A lifelong republican speaks truth about putting country before party and that should scream volumes to the people! Oh and as usual democrats are warm and accepting to this republican because dems care for one another they don’t create division and hate the way todays trump republicans do.
  • @dgibbsfl
The people are speaking while Trump and the big money (including Saudi money) corporate media are left completely flat footed.
