With Finland joining NATO, the alliance's border with Russia has doubled in length. DW's Teri Schultz reports from the town of Imatra, near a border area where Finland is constructing a pilot security fence of 3km length. The fence is set to stretch over 200 km in the upcoming years.

It's heartwarming to see the extent in which Russia can be toppled by their own incompetence.
  • @layton3503
The fence is not to stop Russia, it's just to point out where the border actually is.

As a Norwegian, seeing Finland preparing for the worst, is just what I expected from the prepper-nation of the Nordics. Here in Norway we didn't think that was necessary anymore. But we were wrong.
  • The colours of the flags of Finland and NATO seem to match very well indeed.

Great to see Finland join NATO. The Finns are an excellent asset for NATO, and I believe that NATO is an excellent deterrent to Russia. Win win. Putin has shown no appetite to engage NATO, despite endless rhetoric and empty veiled threats. 👍🇫🇮

So strange how Russia is so concerned with countries building their defences as if they were planning to invade it...
  • @OKingSizeTv
It is such a waste to call it the Finnish border. Would be way cooler to call it the Finnish Line.
  • Finland is a great asset for NATO - welcome fins hopefully the Swedes will be able to join in short order

🇷🇺 : "This can be a threat for our security." Well, a wall cannot hurt you unless you charge into it with your head.
  • @andyhurrell
Finland is arguably the best defended country in the world. But, there again, realistically, they are threatened from only one source, so their defence policy need not be complicated.
  • You don't need to worry about Finland. If anyone can handle the Russians, it's the Finns.
  • @blacksmith88
Finnish terrain can be compared to Alaska. It is life-threatening to wander here and there. That's why the fence is only in certain places.
  • Hanna Smith nailed it: Russia is unpredictable... You need to be prepared for everything ... even the fact that Russia might be nice one day... quite unexpected... and unbelievable...
  • Welcome, Finland! A necessary & optimistic upholding of democracy! Bravo!

"Large numbers of Russians live in or visit Imatra every year" That's how it starts.
  • @mulgeroinen
Never imagined someone outside of Finland could pronounce Imatra so well
