This is a traditional South American song played on a folk instrument that is said to have originated in the Andes Mountains. The instrument is called a charango, a ten stringed instrument. The pairs of strings are tuned to GCEAE, similar to the ukulele. The middle pair of E strings are tuned an octave apart.

If this melody sounds a little familiar, it may be because Simon and Garfunkel redid the song in their own version, that became popular in the early 70s.
