In Doom 3, the Marine is trapped on a space station with demons. In DOOM, the demons are trapped on a space station with Slayer.

Fun Fact: Doomguy doesn't use guns to even the odds for himself. He uses them so the demons have a fighting chance.

The demons didn't want him to wake up. They wanted to keep him sealed so he'd stop killing them all. They even protected his coffin to prevent others from waking Doom Guy. Minor detail
