Originating from the feudal, heavily forested world of Tanith, the regiment was forged in a time of upheaval, when its legendary wood-warriors dismantled the monarchy, leading to a society of democratically elected city-states. The unique environment of Tanith, with its mobile forests of Nalwoods, endowed its inhabitants with an exceptional sense of direction and a suite of survival skills, defining their future as unparalleled scouts and marksmen within the Astra Militarum.
Led by the rare figure of a Colonel-Commissar, Ibram Gaunt, the Tanith First and Only were formed under dire circumstances, narrowly escaping annihilation by a Chaos war fleet through Gaunt's decisive action. The remnants, reformed into a single regiment, lost much but gained a reputation for their ghost-like prowess on the battlefield—hence their nickname.
