[BRIEF HISTORY OF INTRAMUROS]
The moment you enter the walled city of Intramuros, you’ll feel like a time machine has brought you back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Going around this oldest district in Manila, you will surely fall in love with its old world charm.
From when the city was founded in 1571 until the end of the Spanish rule in 1898, Intramuros was Manila. The name Intramuros means “inside the wall.” For 400 years, Intramuros served as the center of the Spanish occupation, originally built to be the residence for Spanish government officials and their families. It was where the most influential and wealthy citizens of colonial Manila lived. The natives and Chinese were not allowed to live inside Intramuros, only the Spanish elite and mestizos.
The walls of Intramuros were meant to protect the city from foreign invasions. The walls were six meters high and three kilometers in length, covering an area of about 160 acres. Entry and exit were only through its seven fortified gates. Within the vast walls, throughout the 51 blocks of the city, were churches, hospitals, government offices, military barracks, schools, and houses of the Spanish elite.
Intramuros has been devastated by battles, fires, and earthquakes but has survived the test of time. It holds bittersweet memories of the colonial past, a heritage worth preserving and sharing with the world.

The Philippines is truly the "melting pot" of the world. It is a combination of Filipino, American, European and Asian heritage. From the hi-tech modern metropolis of BGC, to the most rural & indigenous provinces of Batanes or Ifugao, the Philippines is the most diverse country on Earth. The most talented too hehe ♥️🇵🇭

I hope the city can get more funding to remove the overhead wires in both Intramuros and Binondo (Chinatown) and encourage pedestrian shopping streets like in Europe. It's already been done quite successfully in Bonifacio High Street.
-
We went to Intramuros early 2019! If only those slums and spaghetti wires would be removed... sad.
-
Intramuros can never fully replicate what the city used to look like in the past, but I believe the area can be so much better than what it is now. The area is still not bad and nice compared to other areas in the city. You have the Fort, Churches, museums, and while some of the old style buildings might not be the best restorations, it isn't bad. If they can just try to invest better in this area and spark a better life, that's all you can ask for. I don't think you can move the residential areas there which I totally understand, but hopefully some of the modernist buildings can be removed and replaced to bahay na bato style. I also would love if that Golf club that occupies a great amount of Green space could be converted to a park and areas can just simply be clean with good places to walk, shop, hangout, and eat.
-
If the electric wires will be placed underground, Intramuros will be like a European City.
-
Thanks for sharing and have fun
-
Very beautiful old and historic city of Manila, it is the greatest joy of the city! Very good video !
-
Nice, driven by the gate, in 1987, now I get to see inside!
-
Make Intramuros car-free. That's so obvious.
-
The old buildings look stunning...thank you for sharing
-
Things to do to improve Intramuros: 1. Remove the squatters 2. Put those ugly wires underground 3. Ban tricycles, padyaks and jeepneys and instead revive the tram system that goes around Intramuros. 4. Prohibit road side parking 5. Widen the sidewalk with cobblestone for an old city vibe. And there you go, Intramuros will be alive again and it will attract more tourists. So many opportunities wasted with this wonderful historical place.
-
Great walking tour, my friend! Thanks for sharing!
-
Hello from California! Thanks for bringing back memories of my college years at Mapua (BSEE74) and stay at a nearby boarding house.
-
Intramuros is beautiful, full of history. We should look to Boston for examples on how to care and preserve historical sites. This place has amazing potential. A gem to be polished. They should charge people for parking and use the proceeds to improve the area. Btw, that golf course is a slap in the face to all Filipinos. That area should be a walking and biking trail where people can picnic and enjoy the walls from outside.
-
ang ganda naman talaga ng intrmuros
-
Watching this is like being in Europe. I hope the next president will not gonna ignore this and the old Chinatown. Philippines is a very diverse country. The next president should focus more on nature. It can make our country clean and I hope that they will help those poor people that's living anywhere. Plus, protecting endangered animals in our country and also even animals that's not endangered. Our country is rich. I hope the Philippines will rise soon. Thanks so much for this!
