So it's decided: Lenny is responsible for your lack of music knowledge over the years. And that's why he was denied steak for so long.

Hendrix moved from Seattle to London in 1966, where he played in front of every British rock god. More than one echoed Jeff Beck's reaction, "Now what am I going to do for a living?"

I’m 72 and this song still blows me away .. hard to believe Bob Dylan wrote & preformed it first .. Jimi made it into an iconic song for its time .. RIP Jimi

Imagine hearing that for the first time when almost all of the other guitar work was three-chord-rock&roll. It blew our minds.

These are sounds that no one ever heard coming out of a guitar. Jimi's guitar changed rock music forever, he opened a whole new world of sounds that showed the sky was the limit.
  • @danielhammond3
Rolling Stone magazine ranked the 250 greatest guitarists of all time and Jimi Hendrix was ranked #1
  • When Bob Dylan heard Jimi's version he reportedly said, "That's his song now.". Jimi was much admired by Eric Clapton and each said separately that they thought the other was so talented they were scared to play with each other. Hendrix was one of those talents who inspired so many guitarists who followed behind him.
  • Y'all hear his guitar and it just sounds normal today. Not then. The nifty thing about listening to him now is seeing how the music has evolved.

Bob Dylan said Jimi's cover is so iconic it's now Jimi's song. Even when Dylan plays it live he says it feels like he is doing a cover song.
  • At the age of 19, Hendrix joined the Army, only to be released a year later. Once out of the Army, he took on the stage name Jimmy James and went on to perform as a backup musician with various acts, such as the Isley Brothers, Curtis Knight & the Squires, Little Richard, and Sam Cooke. :_Chewie::_Like::_Cool::_Paddy::_Irish::_OMG::_Luck::_Spicy:

It was mesmerizing to hear this when it first released. My little ten year old self was forever changed.

Jimi Hendrix is another musician whose importance exceeded his popularity. "All Along the Watchtower" was his only top 40 hit (it reached number 20 on the Billboard pop charts). I think he was a bit too "out there" for a lot of people at the time. Hendrix wasn't just a technically great guitarist. He was very creative, especially with effects. He pushed the limits of what could be done with the instrument, which encouraged other guitarists to do the same. Part of Hendrix's stage act was to set fire to his guitar at the end of a concert. He got the idea from The Who, who would smash their instruments. Hendrix and his manager Chris Chandler wanted something equally dramatic to attract publicity. When Hendrix joked, "Maybe I can smash up an elephant," Chandler replied, "Well, it's a pity you can't set fire to your guitar." He first did it in London in 1967. If you want to listen to more Hendrix, I'd suggest "Purple Haze," which he wrote himself. He also did a wild version of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock that the editors of Guitar World Magazine called "the greatest performance of all time." Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarist was Terry Kath of the band Chicago. whom he called "the best guitarist in the universe." If you want to see why, I'd suggest watching a video of the band performing their hit "25 or 6 to 4" live at Tanglewood (a music venue in Massachusetts). Thanks!

Hendrix was the inspiration for so many guys to take up the guitar during my high school years. Everyone wanted to play his song Purple Haze.

There was one time in the 60s when Jimi appeared on a BBC show hosted by singer Lulu. During that, he was doing his song "Hey Joe". Though he did most of it, he stopped it abruptly, and explained to the live studio and TV audience that he was going to "stop playing this rubbish" so that him and his band could dedicate a song to Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce), who had just broken up at the time. He went into a rendition of "Sunshine of Your Love", which Cream had made popular. Because of this, it threw of the BBC's schedule for that evening, and it resulted in him getting banned from the network. This was supposedly the inspiration for Elvis Costello when he pulled a similar stunt on "Saturday Night Live" in 1977.

Purple Haze is probably the song most closely identified to Jimi. Thanks Diane😊
  • In 1967 there was a music festival called the Monterrey Pop Festival. One band you have previously reviewed, The Who, played a set, after which they smashed their instruments on the stage. Jimi Hendrix followed, and realizing he had to top that, he set his guitar on fire. You can probably find clips in YouTube.
  • He was definitely a very talented individual! It is odd that so many musicians have died at 27. And as we recently learned, stuff is preppy now, not cool. Lol. Great shoutout Dan! And thanks for the great job on my shoutout Diane!
  • Did You Know? There's a unofficial Documentary made about Jimi Hendrix in 2013 called Hendrix On Hendrix. It interviews Leon Hendrix(Jimi's Brother) and friends of Jimi's Hendrix. Also shows photos of His Life and Archival Footage of Jimi playing Music Events. :_Chewie::_Like::_Cool::_Paddy::_Irish::_OMG::_Luck::_Spicy:
