What is biodiversity and why is it important?

Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. Dr Steve Morton talks about the different values that humans obtain from biodiversity and the role we will need to play in shaping its future. (07:51)

the factors that contribute to biodiversity are: Species, genetic variability, diversity of ecosystems, evolutionary history and ecosystem functions. the concept of biodiversity originally gained traction in the scientific community: in the 1980s because of the concern of human beings on the planet. It's trying to highlight that our community is important and we should take care of it. the 5 categories that help answer the question why diversity is important is: economic value, ecological life support, cultural value, recreational value, and scientific value.

Great Explanation of the values of Biodiversity in Australia, that can be easily applied globally. I'm not sure about that #6 reason to protect Biodiversity "Negative Value". This is the first I'm hearing of this topic, and am curious to find out more about it.
