JungleRoar: Trags recaps the ups and downs of 2024 Bengals Draft with James Rapien

Published 2024-04-30
CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals think they have hit the jackpot by drafting 6-8 tackle Amarius Mims 18th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. They have an offensive lineman who could step in be an impact player right away. How did the Bengals do with their remaining nine selections? What needs were addressed? What reaches were made? How will Dax Hill respond to being moved to corner and competing with DJ Turner for the second starting corner spot opposite Cam Taylor-Britt? Trags chats with James Rapien of BengalsTalk.com to analyze and break it all down.

James, your philosophical perspective on "the process" showed another side of yourself. It is a complimentary demension.

The Bengals just didn’t have one or two guys that might be stars like the Bears with Caleb Williams and Odunze,or Washington with Jayden Daniels and Johnny Newton. Those are the only two guys that stand out that will help their team. The Bengals drafted a lot of good players that can help their team on both sides of the ball. They addressed the O line with Amarius Mims,a guy that has serious potential to be a good starting RT in the league. They drafted Kris Jenkins, who proved week in and week out he can win against good competition and is a guy who will fit right in with this Bengals defense. Then Jermaine Burton out of Alabama, the guy has exceptional rout running abilities with top end speed. The guy is a Swiss Army knife that can be used multiple ways in this Bengals offense. I like the picks in McKinley Jackson who fills a need at nose tackle as well. They also drafted a very athletic DB in Josh Newton who had really good seasons on the back end of that horn frogs defense. Plus they drafted a few tight ends and a backup center late in the draft with Matt Lee. I like what the Bengals did in this draft. I gave them a solid B+ in this years draft. But if three or four picks in this draft turn out to be solid starters on this team this draft very well could be the best draft in the Zac Taylor era. It has a lot of potential to be a great draft for the Bengals. They addressed holes on the team, while also selecting the best players at that position. That’s a win win!!

I’m also exited about Cedric Johnson he had 7.5 sacks last year at Ole Miss 4 the year before that and 6.5 his freshman year. I can’t fucking believe this guy was still there in round 6. He was a 3rd round pick all day long

Battle should be starting. He was the 8th ranked safety last year.

Mekhi Wingo is not a nose tackle. I know because I watch all LSUs games and I folllw the team closely. Wingo was a disruptive 3 tech. Maason Smith played 3 tech sometime and NT sometime. Jordan Jefferson was the teams true NT. I love me some Maason Smith I think he could be great. Wish he would have come back to school for another year. He would have been a 1st round pick next year. I wouldn’t have taken him in the second round though. I would have used that last 3rd round pick in him. We could have make him a NT. Do yall remember Renell Wren? He is 6’5’’ 315.

Mclaclin was a WR his first 3 years In college and converted to TE. He also just turned 25 in March. And he did 20 reps on the bench press. That’s pretty good for a TE. Considering Ossai and Hendrickson are both DEs and they both put up 19 reps. So no question about his strength. He has good explosion numbers 35 inch vertical almost a 10 foot braid jump. Those are extremely good numbers. He ran a 4.61. That’s faster than Travis Kelce. But Tanners 10 yard split is 1.58. Jamar Chases 10 yard split is 1.59. Just saying. He also broke Gronkowskis record for receptions by a TE at Arizona. That’s where Gronk went. Erick All is almost 6’5’’ 252 but didn’t test because I guess he was hurt but he has some kong arms 33 inches which is good for catcher radius.

Jackson Carman could only play LT. I think that’s crystal clear. When he came in at LT in 2022 he was pretty good. In the playoffs in the snow he didn’t allow any sacks on Burrow.

The pick of All in round 4 makes no sense if you're "all-in" on winning now. We passed on a running back with elite speed who averaged 7 yards per carry to get an older prospect for 2025 who has had back and knee surgery.

DJ Ivey is probably starting the season on the PUP list and may have to go to the practice squad to get back into game shape. And I would cut Jalen Davis because we don’t need him. Dax is the future nickel and backup this year. I’d let Jalen go so he can get on another team. The Titans might want him.

Do yall know who is a free agent right now? Tre Flowers is. We need a veteran CB and Flowers is big long and fast and we know him. He is only 28 he is 6’3’’ 200 lbs has 34 inch arms and runs 4.45. I think we should bring Tre back.

Dax will be fine. He played CB at Michigan. Mostly nickel but some outside too. He never played FS at Michigan. He played a little SS in the box but he was never the roaming free safety the center fielder. That’s not what he is good at. Dax is an elite nickel CB period. So they are moving him back to the position he played at Michigan. I don’t think he beats out Turner or CTB though because he was primarily nickel or a nickel/SS hybrid if you will. Like Brian Branch for the Lions. That’s Dax. Branch was classified as a safety in college too but he played Nickel primarily. Don’t worry Dax will excel backing up Hilton this year then next year he is the starter. That’s why I think they should cut Jalen Davjs. If all Davis can do is play nickel we don’t need a 2 backup nickels.

Billy Price shouldn’t have been picked because he did t test. Jackson Carman also didn’t test! Hakeem Adeniji tested. Dante Smith tested.

McKinley Jackson was gone at 102 or 105, not a reach at all.
