Is God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla As Good As Everyone Says?

This DLC really blew me away, was not expecting it to go as hard as it did! It was very very nostalgic for me personally 😳

Story, loot, fight, story, fight boss, story, loot. When you break down Valhallas Gameplay loop it is very very similar to the classic god of war games (though the older games had a LOT more cinematic flare over the story parts paired with QTE'S to hide the loop more) that makes it a really nice return to form for me personally. And if they were to speed up kratos' attacks and pull the camera back then it could easily just be another classic GOW game.

As someone that played the DLC a lot longer, there are more issues with the gameplay that stop making this DLC feel like a rouge like. For one, the first chest you open when you start a run deeply influences everything else you can pick up and even what rooms you visit. Like say you pick up something for the Leviathan Axe from the chest in the first room then you are guaranteed to go to Niflheim, get a Nornir chest with Leviathan crests if the question mark door appears, and all the weapon perks are made for only that weapon. The only thing that you can get for other weapons once you lock in your weapon choice are the different runic attacks for the other weapons. The lack of randomness is nice if you want to get through the story but on a lot of repeat plays it gets stale. What I would like to have in this mode is if you can get weapon perks and upgrades for all weapons rather than the one you lock in the first chest. Though I'm happy with what we got but some changes to some gameplay elements would be nice if they implemented them but that might be too much to ask for. I have like 10 hrs or more in this game mode if anyone is curious. Feel free to ask for tips, I know a few more.

Why are you saying the final boss is the same? Just because you fight the same character each time doesn't mean you are fighting the same boss. He uses different weapons each time and fights you differently each time as well. The only thing that stays the same with each encounter with Tyr is the fact that he disengages for a while when you get him mid-health and forces you to fight some minions. But even then the way the minions attack you is different across the three variations as well. Other than that, I do agree with your thoughts on the dlc.

I didn’t enjoy the repetitive nature of the game mode but the over all conclusion was definitely worth pushing through.

This is the most generous piece of free content I've ever played , story and lore wise it really fleshes out and gives closure to kratos character arc and how much he's grown.

I would love to see you do a video about sly cooper series or just an individual game from that series I loved these games as a kid they were a big part of my childhood

Really enjoyed your video. As someone who's been playing since Day 1 of the original the DLC has been supremely satisfying. I want a remake of the trilogy real bad, or at least a remaster.

Idk what difficulty you played on, but I would imagine the replay ability is more about being able to achieve a 100% run on the highest difficulty. I started on mastery, but due to me wanting to not have to avoid spoilers, I dropped it to courage in order to finish the story in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve finished a couple runs in the end game and I haven’t gotten tired of the gameplay loop yet. I love trying to make the best build and choosing a specific weapon path. Now I’m moving on to the higher difficulty levels. You’re right that the game could really use even more to increase the longevity and wider variety of gameplay from run to run, but considering this was a free addition to an existing game repurposing all of the assets and gameplay with a couple additions to create a fantastic rougelite/like experience, they did an incredible job and exceeded most people’s expectations especially from a story perspective. Comparing this mode to other more complete standalone roguelite/like games is probably a bit unfair because it’s ultimately just a DLC and FREE which is still crazy to think about. I can only imagine what they could do if they made a full fledged standalone roguelite/like God of War game just like this DLC but on another level of gameplay variety and scale.
