Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Men In Black (1997). This sci-fi comedy film is exactly what we were looking for, a great time!

In "Men In Black," we follow Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) as they protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats while keeping their existence hidden from the public.

The main antagonist played by none other than Vincent D'Onofrio was one of our favorite performances. The amount of physical work he put into his Edgar the Bug made the villain memorable!

We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the film's hilarious moments, groundbreaking special effects, and the dynamic chemistry between Smith and Jones.

  • This movie has one of my favorite quotes of all-time. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." I love that quote because there is so much truth to it.

Tommy Lee Jones is from Central Texas and currently resides just outside of San Antonio. He speaks fluent Spanish.
  • "Elvis isn't dead, he just went home" - I still say that anytime someone mentions Elvis being dead.
  • Fun fact: Vincent D'Onofrio taped his knees and ankles to limit his movement and portrait how an alien would have to struggle/learn how to walk and move like a human. :_KnightHype::_KnightLove::_KnightHiKnight:

Vincent D’Onofrio was impeccable as the bug - we never for one second felt he was anything other than an alien in a poorly fitting skin
  • Vincent D'Onofrio is probably one of the most underrated actors of our time. From Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket to Jack Horne in The Magnificent Seven to the alien here. So many actors, even ones like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, DiCaprio, etc, are them playing a role. D'Onofrio is hardly recognizable in his roles once he takes on the character. Chameleon actors are so rare.
  • 39:00 "I love their dynamic. Their relationship is so much fun".....Wait til MiB 3
  • "Hire a decorator to come in here quick, 'cause... DAMN!" the delivery never fails to crack me up
  • Fun Fact: Will Smith made Bad Boys, Men in Black and Independence Day while still making Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

"What makes J so special?" is explained through the recruiting scenes... which make more sense on the rewatch. First with the simple question of "why are we here"... he picked up on the fact that Z just gave them a bunch of buzzwords but didn't actually explain what they were doing, whereas the rest of them didn't question anything - so he's already showing that he's able to question and go against the status quo. Then with the paper test - he shows quick problem solving skills by dragging over the table - which makes a super loud annoying noise - showing he isn't worried about what others think as long as he gets the job done... and then by offering the table to the guy next to him, he shows he can be compassionate and work as part of a team. Then with the gun range, it's a bit more obvious, in that he doesn't easily discriminate by appearances and actually uses critical thinking. That's why they pick him - yes he has stamina and is fast, but more importantly he understands nuance and thinks for himself.
  • J: "Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it." K: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals. And you know it." My favorite quote from this movie.
  • The delivery alone for the whole bit (10:30) "I am half the man that you are" just kills me no matter how many times I see it.
  • Tommy Lee Jones was initially frustrated because Barry Sonnenfeld told him to play his character completely straight while Will Smith had the comedic takes and Jones wanted to take on the comedy as well. When TLJ saw the finishing cut of the film, he told Sonnenfeld he finally understood the dynamic he was going for! The contrast in personalities between TLJ and Will Smith works so well!
  • "People are smart" "One person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals and you know it!" Best line of the movie for me
  • Did anyone notice that during the shooting range scene that little tiffany is the only one on an actual shooting range track that comes forward as a target. All the other aliens are background civilians in a shooting range setup.
  • Vincent D'Onofrio dropping one of the greatest physical performances of all time.
  • Fun fact: the language that the worm aliens serving coffee are speaking is huttese, the language of Jabba the hutt

My favourite minuscule moment during the target practice is that all of the other applicants immediately place their guns on the stand before following Zed. Will Smith is the only character shown double checking that the safety is on before setting it down.
