Easily the most powerful ending to any Air Crash Investigation episode. This crash happened a few miles from where I was born, and I have been fortunate enough to visit the memorial. May all the souls on Flight 242 forever rest in peace.

That dude with the pillows, blankets and s__t was so smart. That's a good idea.

Tbh every time I see Greg Feith I have to wonder if he knows that he’s got a little fan base thanks to this show. His hard work has paid off in not just making aviation safer but also in giving him minor celebrity status among us crash enthusiasts

This was eight days after Tenerife. I'm sure the passengers and crew had that in their minds.
  • My high school friend’s father was on this flight , he worked for NASA . It was a terrible thing for three children and their mother.

The pilots did the best they could with what information they had and with the engine problems that existed. To get a plane down on a highway safely only to hit an unforeseen gas station and still have survivors is a great feat. Rip to al those that died and their families left behind, and may those that lived have a long and happy life.

Descending into a hailstorm is very dangerous. What was sad about this accident the pilot weren't told about hail. May the victims from this accident rest in peace.

I was on a Lufthansa DC10 coming into Atlanta once, in August, from Frankfurt Germany and right at the airport there was a horribly violent storm. The airport was shut down until the storm had passed. Nothing could take off, nothing could land. So, we circled the airport for about 30 minutes. That was the longest and most terrifying 30 minutes of my life. We were getting thrown every which way. At one time it felt like we dropped 500 feet and it felt like we hit something. I guess we dropped when the wings lost lift and when they regained air underneath them it felt like a jolt. The clouds were black as midnight and hail started hitting the plane and the turbulence was something out if a nightmare. The luggage in the cargo hold was crashing up against the floor underneath our feet. The lights went out briefly as well but the lightning kept it lit up inside. I could hear the engines screaming as the pilots adjusted, people were crying, screaming and praying. My God I don't ever want to go through that again. Edit If at all possible, don't fly in the southern US during July and August. Those are the 2 hottest months and the humidity from the gulf is extremely high and extreme heat and humidity causes SEVERE storms. Edit This rendition of Amazing Grace was absolutely beautiful. This was sad. I'm sure that when John Newton wrote Amazing Grace, he had no idea that it would become the most beloved hymn of all time. Greg Feith has seen so much carnage. It has to have an effect him.
  • Sadie Hurst is a great person. She opened her door and cared for the survivors.
  • I co-piloted repositioning flights (727-200's) for Eastern Air Lines (under contract). EAL contracted with FSI, Flight Safety International, for our simulator time, and from what I remember, and have learned since those days, is that the Southern Airways 242 scenarios are mandatory in most ATPL-focused simulator training packages offered by them, till this day....

This, in particular, is one of the best-produced episodes in the entire series. I've watched it again and again, and its impact has never diminished.
  • @optophobe
I've seen many episodes of air accidents and for some reason this particular one resonates the most with me. Such an odd combination of terrible sadness and hopeful happiness. Joy and horror all in one. Really hurts to hear about it.

I can't imagine there are many things that would hold up very well being pelted with a blanket of 500 mph hail stones.
  • The fact was they didn't know there was an airport below them and it could have been a spot for an emergency landing is just messed up
  • @karenhoward6712
The fact that the pilots even LANDED this plane is a miracle!! Then tragedy AND miracles followed…..😥💜
  • @sgreen0000
It is sad when anyone dies but my heart is breaking for the pilots who had decades of training—especially the fighter pilots who have flown almost every condition. 💔😢😢😢🙏🏻❤️

Can’t Believe It’s Been 45(1977)Year’s When Southern Airlines Crashed In Georgia WOW 😮 Man O Man RIP 🪦 God Rest The People Who Didn’t Survive 🥺😢😭
  • @xonx209
They should add an engines surge alarm. Otherwise how would the pilots know? And ATC not knowing about the closer airport is just dumb.
  • same thing happened with a Taca flight to New Orleans, the pilot landed it with no casualties, shame the pilots on this flight didn’t have more room to land
