Here we are with the granddaddy of bike racers. It's Hang-On. I did want to include the LCD games but unfortunatley there is no way to emulate those. There are also two mobile versions for japanese phones which also can't be emulated or even downloaded any more. Such as shame.
But not to worry as there are still 6 versions to see in this video.

Time Code

00:23 - Arcade
02:06 - Sega SG-1000
03:36 - Master System
05:13 - MSX
06:29 - NEC PC-8800
08:21 - Dreamcast
09:43 - All versions running side by side

Enjoy!

When loading the PC-88 version said "Hang-on - wait a moment" when it could've said "Hang-On - Hang on ". Never pass up the chance for a pun!

GOD DAMN that music used to get me hype at the arcades ontop of the mock bike controller....until the first turn....

Master System version is burnt into my mind, those sound effects! True 80's classic.

3:37 Here in Brazil, the first SMS consoles came with Hang On and Safari Hunt (and the secret Snail game) built in memory. I had one of those, miss my childhood! Later, I had the Sega Genesis and Super Hang On. It had all to be a great game, beside it's laggy controls. Awesome video!

Great stuff. I played Hang On once when I was on holidays. The owner of the arcade spot was so impressed with my skills at another game, he gave me a free shot at this game :P good old times.

Oh man..A timeless classic. I'm speechless Mark. I mean, what can you say about Yu Suzuki's early works. Brillant. 8^) Anthony..

This and Outrun sat in my town's arcade for 15+ years. I remember being too small to get the bike to lean, years went by, I grew big enough to play it and did! Still kicked my ass though. Very fun. Today I have fun with the Mark III rom. It's a touch different than the Master System rom as it tells you the name of the different lands as you progress. Circuit, Seaside, Monument Valley, City Night.. etc.. And it boots up saying SEGA MARK III in yellow.
  • I really like the parallax effect on the arcade in the desert stage with the two layers of the rock formations. It looks really good to me. I have a soft spot for Hang On as I had it with the Master System as the pack in. Mine was the cart version with Safari Hunt and not built in(I discovered the built-in Snail Maze game for my system). Hang On was way too hard for me at that young age, especially with how easy it was to explode, but it was fun. The Master System version really could have used some riding music, though. Good battle video as always.

Anyone else get goosebumps when that music kicks in on the Arcade Original? Awesome. I got Hang-On free with my SMS when the game was still being put out on the Cards before it was built in on the later models of the console. I was always disappointment that the SMS didn't have music playing in the game, great game but a massive oversight on not including the music.

Surprised there were no home ports, but then again that's what Super Hang On is for! :)

One of my favorites games ever. The first time I saw this game in Argentina, my country, it was the full motorbike version, I was very short and couldn't play it, however I dreamed about this game and its graphics, which at the time was the closest you can get to a realistic style. Lovely comparison, didn't know there were this many ports!

A perfect way to begin my weekend! I feel much more complete now! This is a game I sometimes forget about but spent so much time playing back in the day. Love it!!

Hang-On in arcade was another groundbreaking game from Sega and this for many reasons: - it began what was called the "Taikan trend" i.e. the use of motion-controlled hydraulic arcade cabinets. - it was one of the first arcade games to use Sega's Super Scaler technology for 3-dimensional sprite scaling. - and it was one of, if not THE first game that introduced digitized drum sounds. It's for this kind of stuff that I love Sega so much =) But sadly the original Hang-On never had a good home port... The SG-1000 port is indeed very compromised but at least it has in-game music unlike a certain... ... Master System port which runs and plays well but no music (especially no Sega music) is a bummer and the fact that our bike crashes when touching opponents is annoying. I see that the MSX port is slightly worse than the SG-1000 port and I noticed this trend for several multiplats on both systems despite having very similar hardwares. And that NEC PC-88 port is awful! But NEC computers often struggle with scrolling and here they managed to add other issues :v Anyway thanx for the video!

+1 for pronunciation. You continue to improve with every video -- keep up the good work.
  • I remember being blown away the first time I saw Hang On in the arcades, and thinking it was so cool that I had a home version on my Master System

Don't forget that the Hang-On in the Shenmue games for the Dreamcast is the advertising signs were replaced by Sega-related ones...
