Lyrics:
I steal a few breaths from the world for a minute
And then I'll be nothing forever
And all of my memories
And all of the things I have seen will be gone
With my eyes, with my body, with me

But me and my husband
We are doing better
It's always been just him and me
Together
So I bet all I have on that
Furrowed brow
And at least in this lifetime
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We're sticking together

And I'm the idiot with the painted face
In the corner, taking up space
But when he walks in, I am loved, I am loved

Me and my husband
We are doing better
It's always been just him and me
Together
So I bet all I have on that
Furrowed brow
And at least in this lifetime
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We are doing better

  • The best thing about this song is that Mitski didnt cut out the breaths she took between lines, so you can sing along with her

In this life, it's just you and Japanese-American indie pop singer Mitski against the world.

"I’m the idiot with a painted face in the corner taking up space, but when he walks in I am loved" THIS HITS SO FUCKING HARD OMG

i cant believe mitski invented what a husband is

I really think this song is about her lying to herself. She's saying she has a perfect husband, a perfect relationship but the sigh at the start says otherwise. She's lying to herself to convince herself that she's fine and that she's happy.
  • In an interview with the 405, Mitski says this about “Me And My Husband”: …I think a lot of marriages are like that because that’s what it is; it’s no longer about being in love. It’s really hard to stay in love and keep the spark. When you get married and you’re with someone for years and years, it no longer becomes about infatuation or having your heart aflutter. But the song is just about “you know what, this may not be love anymore, and I may be unhappy, and I’m going to die one day and this is just going to be my life.” But then turning around and saying “this is the decision I made, and you’re the person I chose, so I’m just going to stick with you. We have our problems, but this is our life and we’re going to live it.” And that’s what it’s about.
  • Reading the comments, I was surprised to see that the song is generally considered sad. To me it was always a happy song. Like two people who are struggling in their relationship but still working hard to make it work, not giving up on each other and what they have together. That's how I interpreted the "we're getting better" and the " in this lifetime we're sticking together". Just two lovers dedicated to each other, even in the hard times.

You can’t make a song happy and sad at the same time Mitski: hold my husband

i know this song is about a (either empty or fulfilling) marriage, but for me it represents the hope in life. life sucks, but holding onto that tiny glimmer of hope, no matter how small, keeps me going. “but when he walks in, i am loved, i am loved, so i bet all i have on that furrowed brow, and least in this lifetime, we’re sticking together” if i hold onto hope, i can believe that i am/will be loved, so i will keep going. when i listen to this song after a tiring day, i sigh with her at the start to release my stress and settle into the upbeat music to remind myself i have to believe things will get better. it’s the kind of mentality mitski sings about: switching between pessimistic and insecure to hopeful and holding onto a better future someday. it’s why this song is my comfort song.

Mitski really wrote a song called "me and my husband" and it starts with a sigh. I CAN'T -
  • @Guguchina
Jokes on you - I already know all the lyrics from listening on repeat!
  • @Tamo413
For me the "when he walks in I am loved, I am loved" feels like shes saying how she feels like she is nothing without him. People dont want to pay attention to her unless he's with her, she's just "in the corner taking up space"
  • @tink1355
i think the song is about existential dread. the first few lines express this notion - she thinks about how meaningless and tiny her own existence is, how it will all be gone soon and how her life amounts to nothing more than stealing some oxygen from the earth. but when someone she loves walks in, she can forgot these feelings and her life has some meaning. she can “bet all she has on that furrowed brow” and knowing she is loved makes it bearable to live. even though her life is ultimately meaningless and she’ll die, she and her husband are sticking together in this life time. it’s a song about how the existential worries of existence are quelled in the presence of people we love.
