Danny Boy, Live at Red Rocks - The Tabernacle Choir

Published 2016-03-17
The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform the Irish folk tune, "Danny Boy," at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado during the 2009 Central US Tour. "Danny Boy" is arranged by Mack Wilberg.

Lyrics:
O Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountainside
The summer's gone and all the roses falling
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
O Danny boy, O Danny boy, I love you so.

But when ye come and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear though soft you tread above me
And all my grave shall warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

  • I wish to thank the Tabernacle Choir for sharing this awesome Irish music video with me .
  • The song is known in Ireland as The Derry Air, which means the Derry Tune. Derry being an Irish city and County. A lady visiting and staying overnight in lodgings heard a travelling bard (a fiddle player) play the tune outside her window on the street.. No words are known to have existed. She asked a song writer to put words to it. It's about a father seeing his son off to war. having lost one son already. Danny, Dan, Donal, Daniel and Donald are the same name. It can be a first or second name. If a surname, it is likely to be prefixed by O (of the clan) or Mac (son of). It connects back to the biblical book of Daniel. Meaning strong man blessed by God. In the prophecy it was said a strong man would emerge as a leader in the world about now. Watch out for him, it is said is name will be Daniel and the hand of God is upon him.

  • I had the privilege of seeing the Tabernacle choir rehearse on Temple Square last October for the first time . I closed my eyes to focus on the singing. To me it was most heavenly sound I had heard. 5 days before that I watched them sing 'Loves Divine, all Loves Excelling' at the end of the morning session of General Conference. It was that wonderful it brought me to tears.
  • I love this song it reminds me of my dad who passed away His name was Daniel and his family called him Danny Boy. I miss him so much and he would sing this song to us as children many times.😪😪

My little brother Danny died of meningitis aged 7 in 1945, my parents were poor Irish working class people. My mother had 10 children 6 died and only 4 of us survived to adulthood. But, both of my parents never got over the loss of this precious little boy. It brings me to tears every time I hear this song I never knew my brother but he has a place in all of our families hearts. We are now only 3 siblings left my darling older sister died on Easter Sunday from the coronavirus, she is so sadly missed by us all. But, I, pray to the almighty that one day soon we will all be reunited as a family in heaven if God so wills it. Amen Thank you kingdom choir for a beautiful rendition of this famous Irish ballad. The only time a ballad was written for a father to a dead son in Irish folklore.
