The Acropolis in the Greek capital Athens has been closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect visitors from the Cerberus heatwave gripping the country.

Tourists have been barred from entering the country's most popular attraction from 12:00 to 17:00 (9:00-14:00 GMT).

Athens is sweltering in temperatures of 40C (104F) or more.

Much of southern Europe is experiencing extreme heat with potentially record temperatures expected next week.

It's not a heatwave! It's standard temperatures. For god's sake.

As an Australian, all I can say is stay inside and keep cool. Rest in front of a fan/air conditioner and stay hydrated. Eat cold foods. Wet towels on face/around the neck help. Leave a bowl of water with some rocks in it outside for wildlife (rocks ensure the little ones cannot drown). 35C+ weather is normal in Aussie summer, you just need to be smart about dealing with it.

I visited the Acropolis in the 1980s and the heat was over 100F. Nothing has changed.

It’s not always AC and indoor ventilation. Seek cooler parts of the city with open spaces and lots of shade, bodies of water, and clean surroundings. Stay hydrated and try to relax. Otherwise one will end up burning more energy inside and out.
  • He was a good guest. Enjoyable to listen to. Made great points. Heat is not the only problem. It’s what heat and rain floods do to increase health issues. For now, the people will deal with heat.
