Compilation of Minneapolis/St. Paul's Green Line Light Rail

Published 2024-06-14
To celebrate the Metro Green Line's 10th birthday here are clips of Green Line trains along the route between 35W Junction (where the Green Line splits off from the Blue Line near downtown Minneapolis) and the eastern terminus of St. Paul Union Depot.

The Green Line (previously called the Central Corridor) began construction in 2011 and opened on June 14, 2014. The last time there was rail transit between the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul was the original streetcar system, which was shut down in 1953 in St. Paul and the rest of the system shut down in 1954.

In addition to serving the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Green Line also serves the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and various destinations along University Avenue. Two prominent landmarks on University Avenue are Allianz Field (near the Snelling Avenue Station) and the Minnesota State Capitol (right next to Capitol/Rice Street Station), but there's also plenty of small destinations that showcase the diversity of the area.

In its early years the Green Line enjoyed successful ridership with between 35,000 and 50,000 people using it on a daily basis. Since the pandemic the Green Line has slowly recovered ridership (currently ranging between 20,000 and 29,000 people daily), but also has challenges with troublemakers (people smoking or doing drugs on trains and station platforms, people holding doors, vandalizing, littering, etc.). While it's gotten better since the pandemic, there's still a ways to go to make it a comfortable service again. It used to be that way in its early years, so hopefully we can get back to that.
