As Ethan Becker once said (I think): "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes improvement."
  • @lawnmower16
The problem with "just practice" and "draw every day" isn't that they're bad advice, it's that they're vague advice
  • He accidentally stumbled into the BEST way to follow this advise mostly by being BORED, and that's pretty on point for a lot of that guy's entire persona.

I think an often overlooked learning EVERY ARTIST needs to go through is to find out what they actually like/want to do/are passionate about As a traumatized autistic it took me 22 years to find that out and only NOW I'm able to practice the right things. When you find out what you wanna do, the road to it becomes clearer. That's why I'm telling beginners that the first steps should be: Experiment A LOT, find out what you like/don't like, practice the fundamentals bc you're gonna need those anyway.
  • @catsupy
Tangent here, but I think you should be really proud of your speed-paint in this one! The shape of her face and position of her eyes are perfect, and you've improved A LOT especially over the past year! I know you've had trouble with faces, but this work right here shows you that honest and calculated efforts does make for marked improvement! I feel like this is your best work! Fantastic job :)
  • I think a topic that is stupidly argued about... References. References have improved my art so much. Mirrors, photos, figures like Body Chan. I've stumbled across Disney reference photos. They are amazing! Alice in Wonderland, Tinkerbell and so on. I seriously want a full book of Disney reference photos. But there are so many people/idiots that argue that references are "cheating" Historical artists have made crazy contraptions for mirror tracing and other references tools. TLDR: I would suggest a video about references.

"Drawing every day isn't feasible for everyone." FINALLY a video that says this. People have to remember PewDiePie knew he was going to get paid for that challenge. That challenge was a trend happening on YouTube for a while and he picked up on it. Now I'm sure he genuinely did want to learn how to draw, but that doesn't change he knew he'd get views, which meant he knew he'd get ad revenue from the videos he'd make about it. In other words: he was paid to learn how to draw. The rest of us don't have that opportunity. People also forget he was originally a graphic designer who took part in photoshop competitions before he went all in on YouTube. So he wasn't a true beginner. He already had a deep understanding of a lot of concepts that transfer to drawing. Favorite video on this topic, thanks a bunch for chiming in!

A good example of how being good at doing something is distinct from being good at explaining how and why. PewDiePie is probably still growing his own awareness of his new skills. He'll likely get to the point someday when he can see his actions in perspective. Anyway, his story's been interesting to follow, and it's enhanced greatly by commentary from artists such as yourself. Nice work!

tbh back when I drew I noticed something: When I drew every day, I wouldn't get any better I'd take breaks and not draw for a few days and I out of nowhere got better. It's like. . . .Your subconscious will do the work for you if you give it time to take a break.
  • @FayN_
just draw everyday is meant to build habit so that you can learn more. that's my understanding at least that's the whole point of pewdiepie video. you draw everyday and learn what you need during that time. it's not as simple as just draw whatever everyday it's the same like his gym advice. just do it everyday first, then you learn along the way with the fundamental and correct form. the most important thing for him is habits and that what he want for us to focus on first before learning fundamentals or even advance skills. . this is common missunderstanding when people say "just practice everyday" and even the one who give the advice is sometime also confusing his advice as well
  • I had a teacher in school who said “practice doesn’t make perfect, it makes habit. Don’t perfect bad habits” -be intentional about what you’re doing and understand why you need to do it that way.
  • I was drawing so much that it landed me in the hospital. I wanted to practice and that caused me stress cause I wanted to improve and though I took break the burn out was extreme. So if you're going to practice drawing just do it for fun. I've giving up art for now because I am scared of it happening again.

Wait... as @Tangermusic pointed out... THERE IS NO SQUARESPACE! Who are you and what have you done with the Duchess?
  • @timidwolf
This reminds me of a recent Nerdforge video, 'Can I learn to draw in 100 hours'. Yes Hansi practiced a lot over a very short period of time BUT he was working from a plan that Martina had made for him which included various resources, techniques to practice and different challenges. So yes you CAN do it, but there is a lot more to it.
  • @pauljs75
Everyone else is discussing art practice, meanwhile I'm pondering how Miku can easily palm a basketball or play a Rachmaninoff Concerto without any problems.
  • @zack_feldman
Thanks again! It’s true, practice needs to be defined, as does study for this to be effective. In addition, specific goals make it much easier to know what to practice and what direction to head in.
  • @kurokura8379
oohh i was waiting for you to talk about this for a while. excited to finish the video :D
  • @user-ec6vf7zq9j
OH! (I'm towards the end of the video) Thanks for helping to take the angst off of pewdiepie by explaining his "practice" advice
