They're some of the weakest Pokemon in the franchise... but can they take on one of its hardest challenges?

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Crystal Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Grass types?

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of trading/importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

It occurred to me this might be the worst type to try Crystal with. Mistakes were made. BUT WE DO IT FOR THE SILPH SQUADDD 🙌
  • Went out of his way to bend the rules a little so he could win the bug catching contest for a sunstone, then ends up never using the pokemon he did it for. Maximum Silph achieved

AHH the nostalgia! Grass types did pretty well here, lots of good utility throughout the team. Your strategies for the first 2 gyms were especially impressive, nice run
  • Man, Johto really doesn't take kindly to grass types. My girl Chikorita was done dirty in those games
  • "People have been searching for effective Miltank counters" My go-to counter is a female Geodude. Resists both Stomp and Rollout, being female makes it immune to Attract. And you can even use Rollout and beat her with her own strategy.
  • I will always say that sunflora should be a grass/fire type. Give it drought to charge up solarbeam and it could be so much more memorable.

First person to do a grass hardcore nuzlocke in johto. What a legend, you deserve all the subs you have and even more. Not just that, he's using meganium he deserves our respect. Take this chikorita-haters.

Underrated Opinion: Gengar's Gen 2 sprite is absolutely MENACING yet incredibly badass

Used the Hoppip line once, through my second proper HG playthrough. It and Togetic really did work as my support line. Grass Type are underrated imo, so many great designs and mons.

You could do more Crystal Hardcore Nuzlockes,it's one my favorite games and it would be awesome if you did more with this game
  • Thanks to its blazing speed, Jumpluff is a nice supporter (in-game speaking). It lacks some offensive presence to deal damage immediately, though.
  • Hey fun fact: if you do a hardcore nuzlocke in crystal with electric types, you can't get mareep. So that would be interesting to watch.
  • I've been meaning to replay Gen 2 for a bit now, this might be the reason that gets me to do it!
  • @me_zaldy
Gengar is an absolute accuracy beast
  • Alright perfect timing, I can watch this while I eat my lunch. As u probably know, this is the highest compliment one could ever give to a YouTube video 👍

13:52 : over easy, but before I flip it I put some cheese and a slice of ham over it. The ham gets nice and seared, the cheese gets melty and crispy on the edges; and the yolk stays runny while the white is all cooked. I eat it over a bowl of rice, which is the best thing to mix a runny yolk into. Mmmm, now I’m hungry…
