Charles Austin Beard was the most influential American historian of the early 20th century. He published hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. He graduated from DePauw University in 1898, where he met and eventually married Mary Ritter Beard, one of the founders of the first Greek-letter society for women, Kappa Alpha Theta. Many of his books, including this one, were written in collaboration with his wife (Mary R. Beard), whose own interests lay in feminism and the labor union movement (Woman as a Force in History, 1946).

In 1921, Charles and Mary Beard published their History of the United States. A contemporaneous review stated: "The authors... assume enough maturity in high school students to justify a topical rather than a chronological treatment. They have dealt with movements, have sketched large backgrounds, have traced causes, and have discussed the interrelation of social and economic forces and politics. All this has been directed to the large purpose of helping the student to understand American today in all its national characteristics and as part of world civilization as well...The literary style is exceptionally clear and crisp, and the whole approach...is thought producing. As a textbook or handbook for the average citizen it ranks with very best." (Summary adapted from M.L. Cohen)

  • I cannot tell you how painful it is to look up "full history of the USA" and find the first video to be 11 minutes long. Glad I found this
  • I'm in my late 50's , refreshing my history and I've enjoyed listening to the audio books... Thank you.
  • Here we are in the 21st century, never before with such a levels of accumulated wisdom, collective connectivity, command over the elements and more manpower available to harvest new insights as never before ... And our primary concern is how to best not offend those who would rather ignore, rewrite and erase history entirely. Yet still keep all the conveniences and benefits.
  • It's awesome to get to study what you want when you've completed your formal education in your major. Studied engineering to make a living. Now I'm studying history and philosophy for enrichment.
  • I actually use this to fall asleep at night it all started with my dad playing it
  • I'm in my late 70's and also enjoying a refresher course of the beginning of the USA and the struggles our ancestors went through to create this country. Know it is time to respect our country before we lose it.
  • I studied the civil war in my junior year of HS. Still today, 43 years later, my most favorite class. Still remember a great deal of the battles fought.ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Thank you to all the volunteers. I really enjoy the different voices and American accents. This book is very interesting. Being English, repeatedly calling Scots Scotch is hilarious.

The dynamic young Swede starting at 42:00 had the clever idea of combining her pogo stick workout with her narration!

  • @RMTmusic1
Even the history teachers in our school's don't know enough to properly teach the children about are past not that kids really care about the history of the U.S. or the world. It really comes down to the parents. The education system isn't the only problem.
  • Needed something to listen to while cooking n actually learned a thing or too. Love audiobooks
  • Many comments say this puts them to sleep. I thought it was great to listen to while burning wood in my campfire. Watch the flames and ponder days past.
