After it became the subject of a National Geographic Documentary, a tintype alleged to show Billy the Kid playing croquet made international news. The truth, however, is that reporters fell for a manipulative documentary and a "facial recognition expert" with a very poor track record without consulting with any actual experts.

The truth is that there is no evidence to suggest the tintype shows Billy the Kid, while the evidence the documentary put forward has been thoroughly debunked by many historians (including great work by Daniel Buck which completely debunked the alleged location).

  • I say its who u believe who's opinion. I believe that is Billy and the Regulators.
  • It’s clear to me that what we have here is the Alfalfa Croquet tin type.

The hills in the photo compared to the site they claim today do not match. Charlie's wife was a short, chubby Mexican woman. This woman they claim to be his wife looks like a tall, slender Caucasion woman.

You also failed to speak on the fact that several people in Billy's circle are identified in this photo. Thats definitely Charley Bowdre on that horse.
  • The hat that "Billy" is wearing in the tintype is similar to the one he wore in the authentic photo. Also this Billy is wearing a sweater, similar to the type he wore in the authenticated photo. I think it could be him.
  • All these people claiming it's really Billy should pool their money and buy that photo. They probably could pick it up cheap about now!

it is interesting that the hat looks like the same style of hat in the picture of billy

Lincoln County, New Mexico averages close to 6,000 feet above sea level, with a high of over 11,000. Average daily temperatures in August 82/53 with a record low of 43. September averages 76/49 with a record low of 30. "Does this look like New Mexico in Aug/Sept?" Yes.
  • That’s Charlie Bowdre on the horse. It’s definitely Billy in the picture along with some of the regulators. John Tunstall played croquet and introduced it to his fellow employees.
  • @nkley1
The guy in the photo is pointed at him, so it MUST be Billy.
  • There is no way to tell if that is Billy. He's too far away and blurry. People even without hard evidence will convince themselves of just about anything. For those who just want it to be Billy, it will be Billy no matter what.

The fact no one is interested in buying it and 2 experts in the field were highly skeptical carries some weight...
  • There will ALWAYS be a doubt in my mind, especially since the subject face is so blurred.
  • I don't know about the location - but the picture DOES look a LOT like him.
  • @chardtomp
I think the only thing any expert could say honestly about that photo showing Billy and other regulators is I don't know? The quality of the photo just isn't good enough to tell one way or the other.
  • @SaltySouthTexan
Without knowing, when I first saw the photo, I said damn, that’s billy the kid. Who’s to say? Tintypes are hard to identify
  • @LJizy
This isn't Billy the kid. It's since been debunked by experts.
