Repairing a broken BJD head

Published 2024-06-15
This doll suffered an unfortunate break during shipping, resulting in the back of the head and part of the headcap shattering into pieces. Imagine how devastated the owner must have been!

He eventually found his way to me for a sturdy repair. The doll's owner elected not to have any filler added to the cracks since they were very smooth, as any fillers would have required sanding, and that would have discolored this tan resin. Still, it's not nearly as noticeable of a seam as you might expect!

Damage during shipping is unfortunately relatively common in the BJD hobby, but hopefully this helps illustrate some of the ways a broken doll can be fixed and given new life.

Have you ever had a doll arrive damaged?

I would be horrified if that kind of break ever happened to a doll... Poor doll.

"Old habits from my jewelry making days", boy do I feel that. Why do a lot of us jewelry or garment makers end up with doll customizing as a next hobby 😅
  • This is very useful, especially for those older dolls that are irreplaceable.
  • I have to say this was so interesting to watch!! You did an amazing job. Your knowledge of how to do things like this is astounding. I would never have thought to repair it that way. Very interesting. Thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I was very impressed that your paint dots transferred so smoothly. I'm always thinking it'll smear and be less than pin-point accurate. I have a pinky finger to repair, so your technique is very helpful.
  • What a cool video! You are awesome, thanks for sharing your craft and skills!

great repair! i had a doll head completely shattered, the face came in five separate pieces from a giveaway i had won that i pieced back together with apoxie sculpt and then painted the apoxie lines gold. i was struggling a bunch with the repair though because no matter how much I buffed the resin sometimes the apoxie would just not stick. it's patched up now but boy was that a hassle haha, I prefer your method by far

I fix mine with super glue, fill gaps with baking soda or wait and fill with UV resin fine pen. I don't bother with pins, if it breaks again then it wont be where the glue was. I like Your video's and hope Your health is well. You gave us a scare, a while back.

This is amazing! I love how it's barely even noticeable. Couldn't the owner get a replacement, though? Or does the company not offer that when things break in shipping? I've gotten all my hands and other broken part shipped without any cost.
