2024 Ice Age – Woolly Mammoth 2oz .9999 Silver Bullion Coin
Introducing the second coin in the Ice Age series from the Royal Canadian Mint – the Woolly Mammoth!
The giant of the Ice Age, the woolly mammoth makes its presence known as it steps across the second release in this bullion coin series featuring prehistoric portraits. A megafauna from Canada’s prehistoric past, Mammuthus primigenius stood over three metres tall at the shoulder and weighed as much as 8 tonnes (17,600 lbs). It is easily recognized by the long, curved tusks that are some of the most distinctive fossils of Canada’s Ice Age.

The woolly mammoth inhabited the frozen steppes of present-day Canada near the end of the Pleistocene Epoch around 100,000 years ago. Thick fur, thick skin, and a small tail and ears are among the cold-weather adaptations that allowed mammoths to thrive until some 12,000 years ago, when they began disappearing from the mainland, although isolated populations persisted until about 4,000 years ago. In June 2022, a 30,000-year-old mummified woolly mammoth calf, with skin and hair intact, was found in the permafrost of Yukon’s gold fields – the most complete frozen mammoth specimen found in North America to date.

ABOUT ROYAL CANADIAN MINT
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1908. Originally founded as a branch of the British Royal Mint to process gold from the Yukon Territories, it became a wholly Canadian institution in 1931 when the British Royal Mint ceased striking Canadian coins. Since then, the RCM has played a vital role in producing all of Canada's circulation coins, as well as a wide range of bullion and collectible coins.

Over the years, the RCM has expanded its operations, modernized its facilities, and pioneered various minting techniques. Notable innovations include the development of the world's first 99.99% pure gold bullion coin, the Gold Maple Leaf, introduced in 1979.

In addition to coins, the RCM produces medals, medallions, and other numismatic products, while also offering refining services for precious metals. The Mint issues commemorative coins to mark significant events, anniversaries, and themes relevant to Canadian culture and history. These coins often feature unique designs and limited mintages, appealing to collectors worldwide.

The Royal Canadian Mint stands as a symbol of craftsmanship, innovation, and service to Canada's coinage needs, while also making significant contributions to global numismatic and bullion markets.
