In this video, we assess whether replacing a PS5's HDMI port at home is feasible and whether it's worth all the hassle. What could go wrong...?

** Please note that some of the points made in this video are for dramatic effect such as " millions die due to HDMI failure, and millions more die of heart attacks when they ask repair shops how much they charge to fix the issue". The real number is likely in the thousands. **

Not even kidding when I say I spent over 12 hours fixing this thing. Micro soldering is no joke. Shoutout Northridgefix for the amazing tutorial videos, expect more content like this in the future!
  • @Lordhitchy
This is definitely ambitious, watched a repair on this issue not so long ago and it looked difficult. I'll finish watching the video now to see how you did
  • @hiijustin1905
As someone who's been doing soldering and micros soldering for over 10 years you did a really good job, that retrace looked amazing. And I'm sure you're ready for the more stuff!

Wasn’t expecting another long format video so soon. Really love these ones

I charge 105 bucks for these. It takes some time to master them. But once you do enough of them you'll be able to disassemble them replace that HDMI port and reassemble them in no time. Takes me a little bit under an hour to do each one.

I've replaced a fair bit of HDMI and other connectors from several devices. If I can give you some tips: use aluminium or kapton tape to cover the surrounding components if you are new to the game. This will effectively shield the other components or close connectors from overheating and help you direct the heat towards the faulty component. Low melt solder is not needed really, just have good (lead) solder and add this. Don't overheat your components so you don't damage plastics, but use sufficiant heat to get the solder melding without spending too much time doing it. Take some other broken boards to practice desoldering, you will be amazed how fast you will master this. You have all the right gear to do so, just put in some hours of practice.

5:17 you can see that wire is almost touching the other solder pad! Thats probably causing the issue
  • @Ahvarok
Multimeter is your best briend, probably the HDMI IC Chip got shorted also, or the filters are blow up. Maybe a small soldering iron like a C210 or T30 would make it easy also. But for a beginner job that was pretty clean, everyone starts like that, spending over 10 hours on one device that didnt even got fixed, but the experience comes quickly.

You’re getting better and better with your work. I’m pretty sure that in future you’ll be able to swap microchips on phones motherboards! Good luck PRG, I’m your huge fan!
  • Micro soldering scares me. I did a bunch of practice on dual shock 4 controllers by replacing the analog stick that had drift and that hate me tense. In the end I could never really get the drift to go away.
  • @dendys04
if there are no missing pins u can do this with any heat gun and some flux u did a amazing job tho idk why it wouldnt work there has to be something somewhere else
  • Hey, just check diode values, fix it and HDMI will work again! And be more relaxed during soldering. But great job! Nice to see next guy who makes this kind of repairs :)
  • @williamq6435
Would it have been better to tin the hdmi port; tin the pads and solder the hdmi port? Then you could go on with the trace repair and mask if ater you have made a secure connection. (I remember when I asked you about how to learn microsoldering, I've been doing it for 6 months now, thanks !)
