On a cold day in January we hit up the Old Leatherman Cave trail in Watertown, CT, and visited the Letherman's Cave! This cave is one of many that he supposedly stayed in, many of which you can hike to in Western CT or Eastern NY.

For more information about the Leatherman, visit connecticuthistory.org/the-old-leatherman-alive-in…

The trail and cave are in the Mattatuck State Forest, and can be accessed off Bidwell Hill Road of Rt. 6 just past the main entrance for Black Rock State Park.

Thank you for making this. I've been so curious as to what it looked like on the inside. Now I know.

As a youth my buddy and I searched for a Leatherman cave in North Salem NY, one of his stops. We lived our summers on Lake Waccabuc in South Salem. There were no paths just locals telling us, “somewhere in those woods” but it was too thick and we did not find it. The locals showed us where to start in but we never found it. Still yet to be discovered by non-iPhone and gizmo addicted youth! Are there any of us left? Good hike video!

I can see how he survived why back in there with a fire going. Id imagine some of the locals may have given him a heavy wool blanket or two. Shame he had to live like that but he definitely had freedom.
  • Love Leatherman's Cave there in Watertown. There's a few different ways to get there.
  • There is one ..or Might have had one in Bristol CT. Disfigured ..So He lived as Homeless
  • The rock formation you call the Leatherman Cave is incorrect. The correct name is the Rock House. Until the 16th edition of the CFPA Connecticut Walk Books (1990) it was called it this. For unknown reasons, the name was changed to Leatherman Cave In the 17th edition (1993). The true Leatherman Cave is on a feeder trail near Route 6 at GPS 41.64113, -73.09253. There is a new sign next to it. Please check it out.
