May I respectfully point out to the ambassador, who is surely far more knowledgeable on this topic than I am, that NATO didn't strongarm any of the former Soviet Republics or Soviet satellites into joining. They asked to join for safety because of their experiences with the USSR. Also, Finland and Sweden would still be neutral and outside NATO if Putin hadn't invaded Ukraine.
  • Russia does NOT get to dictate ANY countries ECONOMIES/FOREIGN POLICY. End of story
  • @Wiscotac
A ruthless dictator cannot be appeased.
  • with an ambassador like him being an apologist for Russian aggression - no wonder Putin thought he could get away with it and in 2014 he did. Instead of then bolstering Ukraine we tried to butter Putin up. The ambassadorial team of the time should be ashamed of their rather over optimistic performance
  • This old ambassador makes the same mistake as Chamberlain. He thinks he is dealing with a rational actor, and we can trade land for peace.
  • The Russian apologist fails to recognize several key points, including 1) if Russia is so worried about NATO, then why have they emptied their military bases along the NATO border? They've moved all their kit to Ukraine . They clearly know that NATO will never invade Russia unless Russia attacks them first. 2) Surrendering to Putler will NOT result in peace, but instead will allow Putler to recover and then continue the war on some lame pretext like he did in February 2022.

This former diplomat has the exact level of naivety that Neville Chamberlain had. What a tool.
  • Typical diplomat, cowardice and no will to fight. It sickens me to hear these people who don’t understand Putin will not negotiate and never has and would not abide by any agreements he made. Browder as usual is spot on and should be listened to.
  • Every Country have the Freedom to belong to EU, NATO, wathever, without ask for permission to the neighbours much less to Putin.

Putin took Crimea very easy and thought he could do it to Ukraine. He was wrong.
  • @CynthiaBlair
Mr. Browder is right. NATO is just an excuse Putin has used to justify an invasion..funny that the Baltic Nations joined NATO and Russia didn't care...Finland and Sweden, also. NATO just doesn't expand; as a nation you ask to join. If you go look up NATO / Ukraine relations, they had intentions to join all the way back to the early days of Ukraine's independence from the USSR. Russia isn't the USSR, so why should they have any say in whether or not Ukraine, a free and independent nation, chooses to join NATO, or the EU, or any other organization?
  • This former ambassador to Ruzzia appears to imply that Ruzzian citizens were OK with the idea of taking over Ukraine some time in the future, or they would not have cared about Ukraine joining NATO. Once Ukraine was part of NATO, invading it would no longer have been an option for Ruzzia. That is why Ruzzia needed to keep turmoil in Ukraine on-going.

This asinine idea that Ukraine was pushed into seeking NATO completely strips Ukraine of any agency. If Ukraine wants to align itself with NATO and the EU over russia, as a sovereign nation, it has the right to do so, and russia has NO say in the matter.

I’m a Polish- American and coming from having know the Russian mind I approve Bowder’s message.
  • @JasonWolfeYT
Ukraine wasn’t in NATO and had zero chance to join since 2014. You can’t join NATO if you have territorial disputes with aggressors. Does the ambassador not know about 2014-2022?
  • @larsrons7937
Well spoken, Bill Browder. It's nice to hear some truth for a change.
  • Sir Tony needs to give his head a shake!! For the love of god... "our intent to expand NATO" you have to ask as a country, to join NATO and its no easy feat to be accepted! What a ludicrous statement thats totally untrue 🤮
  • Our ambassador makes me ashamed that we had such people in positions of power. Proof, if any were needed, that intellect does not guarantee wisdom.
  • The Foreign Office are notorious for going native. Reminds me what John Sweeney said of the BBC Station Head in Moscow. He said the guy seemed more of an apologist for Putin than an objective observer.
  • The ambassador is proof that many of these positions are claimed by peoples social connections rather than suitability or astuteness.
